...According to The Washington Post, the Republicans need to "evolve" their positions to keep up with public opinion...

The first order of business for the GOP is to evict all the narrow minded bible thumping screwballs and reactionary rejects. Than it can appeal to a broader, more diverse base and only than will it catch up with public opinion.

recall their big time congressional wins. Republicans will need to loose a few major elections before they consider violating their current base of support.

    more reason to vote democrat.

the gay population would be better off with the support from both parties but again this will not happen till the republican party sees some writing on the walls.

i will NOT vote for someone that did NOT support marriage equality

You are right, but such a move would probably reduce their electorate by a third or more. A three party system; Democrats, Republicans and 'New Republicans' would probably work fine at the local, state and Congressional levels, but it might mean the Democrats retaining the presidency for decades. Given the president appoints SCOTUS justices, America would probably continue on a progressive path for generations.

Also factoring-in future demographics, I'd say the GOP is pretty much screwed for the foreseeable future, regardless of whether it splits or continues in its current form.

The GOP has spent years moving gleefully to the far, lunatic-fringe right.
It's now an embarrassing mish-mash of angry old bigots, religious fanatics, and conspiracy theorists.
The educated, mainstream majority of America wants nothing to do with the GOP freak show. It's embarrassing to listen to them drone on and on about how much they hate gay people, how Mexicans are "rapists" and how the Obama the "muslim" is coming in a black helicopter to take their guns away.
These losers are mostly on government assistance but their addled minds don't see any hypocrisy when they complain about "government handouts."

I have many relatives who used to be Republicans who are horrified at how far the party has sunk.

This is mostly thanks to James Dobson, the leader of the bigoted, fascistic Focus on the Family. When Senator Bob Dole lost the 1996 Presidential election to incumbent Bill Clinton, this was the green light for the complete takeover of the national GOP by the narrow minded bible thumping screwballs. Ever since this unfortunate loss by a moderate, centrist republican in 1996, the GOP has declined and morphed into a glorified theocratic dictatorship. Horribly sad but true.icon_sad.gif

And we showed our 'sinking' on Nov 4, 2014 to good effect. Who knows, maybe we'll sink like that again for 2016.

When Donald Trump was asked why republicans are in retreat, he said it was because they're rapists.

    True story, bro.
