My God, the man could sing; remembering this shining trumpet he could be in climaxes, one forgets the incredible willingness to sing those aching pianissimo arches of melody.

I never heard him in person, and the one time i almost did - Peter Grimes, in Seattle - I canceled, deeply offended by some reactionary comment he'd just made about opera audiences being all gays..

He was also a famous canceler. I drove to San Francisco to hear him Sing Tristan to Nilsson's isolde. He canceled. We got Windgassen in stead, so no harm (Windgassen's acting was superb!). But...

A man of wide contradictions. But we're poorer for losing him.

Truly one of the great recordings. I first got it on LP, then on CD - I'll have to dig it out again! Still the best Walkuere Act I on record, and I count the Walter/Melchior/Lehman.
