Presidential candidate Donald Trump has used a Republican party summit to launch an attack on John McCain over his war record

Speaking at an Iowa gathering billed as a "Family Leadership Summit", Mr Trump escalated a war of words with his Republican colleague. On Monday Mr McCain had accused Mr Trump of "firing up the crazies" with his controversial statements.
On Saturday Mr Trump hit back.
"He was a war hero because he was captured," said Mr Trump. "I like people who weren't captured."

Mr Trump, 69, avoided serving in Vietnam, receiving four student deferments from military service between 1964 and 1968.

No wonder republicans can not win national elections. It's like watching old women give each other abortions.

OK. He pissed off the Latinos, fine they weren't going to vote republican anyway.
But pissing off a bunch of old, white, conservative veterans?!??? What an idiot!!! He clearly doesn't actually want to win. He just wants to stir up shit.

Indeed, I think this probably marks the beginning of the end for his campaign.

Donald Trump: Zero respect for American veterans.
His rich daddy got him out of serving in Vietnam so he could be a party boy with daddy's money. Now he insults the men who did serve when their country called.

Donald Trump is a low-life scum, and the Republicans have made him the leader of their party. He's now in first place in major polls.
Will any of the other GOP candidates stand up to him? Or will they cower in fear like they did when Trump insisted repeatedly that Latino immigrants are rapists and drug dealers.
What a great party you have, Republicans. So many reasons to be proud.

Looks who had to open his mouth!!!

The former Texas governor Rick Perry said the remarks represented “a new low in American politics” and demanded that Trump “immediately withdraw from the race for president.”

Insults are also a very common thing here in RJ land so why all the criticisms? LOL Like who pisses on who?

You're not breaking anything to anyone. I mentioned McCain's "firing up the crazies" line in my OP. It's hardly a secret they dislike one another. The problem for Trump is he shot himself in the foot this time.

Don't be so smug about it. Mc Cain is old news and should retire. He's my Senator anyway and why do you care about American Politics so much?

It will be interesting to see what happens. I really truly believe Trump, did fire up the Crazies and they are all the ones in office.....In his own party!! LOL This will not be pretty.

come on, if McCain wasn't a POW and didn't marry the rich beer girl, he'd be selling Chevy's in Mesa for the past 40 years

    And.......

You know he divorced his first wife. She didn't have the cash he needed. Friends of mine, who are the ultimate hicks told me first hand he was abusive and mean ass.

This came from an ultra conservative Republicans mouth who lived next door to the glorious McCain!!

    LOL

This isn't going to hurt Trump's campaign. The people supporting him don't like John McCain and will not care about these comments at all.

Actually I tend to agree with this. McCain has a weakness for young trophy wives. Perhaps also why he was smitten by Sarah Palin as his VP candidate, who had nothing politically to recommend her.

Former beauty queen, TV weather reader, and Governor for just a few months of one of the least populous States in the US. I think it's a toss-up between Alaska and North Dakota.

Plus McCain's fellow POWs have not all painted a very heroic picture of him while in North Viet Nam captivity. But, he got the hero's welcome when he returned home with the others who were released. And he played that into a successful bid for a Senate seat.

Personally, I think his subsequent very erratic behavior in office suggests he's suffering from untreated PTSD. Not surprising, given what he went through. For which he's blameless, needless to say, but nevertheless makes him unfit to hold the reins of power.

In this regard, I can't entirely fault Trump for his McCain slams, regarding the facts. At the same time, Trump never served in uniform at all. So his position to criticize on this point is weak.

I always told my soldiers, men & women, that everyone of them were already heroes, just for having put on a US Army uniform (or Navy in McCain's case). I have some reservations about McCain, but "hero" in a more general sense I'll accept.

He actually means you "gay" guys.

My own post count is nearing 40,000, in little less than 7 years. But my excuse is I'm retired, and disabled. I'm stuck with spending a lot of time confined to this home office chair. And when I do go out or travel I take my iPad, and go back online when possible.

I find interacting on a screen a little more mentally stimulating than staring out the window, and watching the kayakers paddle by on the river.

Exactly, Southbeach is of working age, so he either has no job or spends nearly all of his spare time posting here (or maybe posting here is his job). And that's just his own post count. I hate to think what his post count would be if you included his various sock puppets over the years (one of whom will probably be along soon to deflect and divert unwelcome scrutiny from the 'main man').

I've never agreed with a (political) word John McCain has ever said. And as for what he would have been doing if his father hadn't been an admiral and he hadn't married a wealthy woman, well... if I hadn't been born to my parents in the place I was born I'd be, you know, the 8th child of a starving single mother on the streets of Calcutta or a dead baby in the Sudan (brilliant "point" that was).

But he didn't use his father's influence to repeatedly avoid serving his country; he used it to serve. He didn't "get shot down"; he was shot down. And we now live in a world where because he was tortured for more than five years, he is somehow... "less" a hero.

And I have no time, at all, for a "military" point of view or understanding of the world.

But unlike the (very strange) point of view of our resident "colonel", John McCain is a hero...to me.

There's an unwritten rule here that when you change someone's words in a quote you make that clear. One way is with the strikeout, leaving the original word in place. By clicking on QUOTE for this post you can see how that's done.

I wrote that I'm "retired" not "retarded" before you altered it. But I suspect the word is one with which you are personally familiar. Have a nice Sunday. icon_biggrin.gif
