I ride BMX with a large group of guys every Thursday night. A couple weeks ago a cop stopped us at our meetup spot to see why so many bikers were gathered without it being an officially sponsored ride (there were around 30 of us).

We talked to the cop, a few guys showed off a few tricks to show we're legit, and established a great rapport with him. The cop high-fived a few of us, gave us his name (Scott Lunger) and drove away. He also said he'd like to watch us ride some Thursday when he's off-duty.

Then, this Wednesday morning, he got shot and killed in a traffic stop. icon_sad.gif

southbeach1500 saidSorry to hear that you lost someone who may have become a good friend - if only he had the chance.

    From the article:

The suspect, 21-year-old Mark Estrada, was arrested Wednesday afternoon when he was admitted to San Leandro Hospital and then transferred to Highland Hospital to be treated for a gunshot wound, police sources told NBC Bay Area

I wonder if Estrada is here illegally.
Who cares? Hayward is not a sanctuary city, so your argument is invalid.

Sorry for your personal loss with this tragedy, Paul, of a guy who might have become a supportive friend of your BMXers.

And also sorry your sad story got hijacked as a vehicle for southbeach1500's political agenda. Maybe that story can be (quickly) given to the media, possibly via the Hayworth PD, as they might like to feature something that highlights Sgt. Lunger's friendly interaction with the community.

    Hey.....

I am really sorry, it's a shame!! I like nice police officers who are just out there trying to do their job. It's not easy and when your in need of one life sure has a way of making you dependent!!

Maybe, your biker group can donate something to a cause of his? Family, children or a partner?

Sorry to hear about this. Specially because it sounds like he's one of the great ones. My condolences to you.

    When will the violence end?

It is always a tragedy when someone is killed in the line of duty, especially when they're a good person too - RIP.

California is a Sanctuary State, I don't think Hayward has seceded from the union:

Since no one in the press wants to discuss his status due to bad press from the Kate Steinle murder, he may be an illegal alien. There's a report he's a drug user to.

There is no such thing as a "sanctuary State". And your links are from Right Wing nutjob sources (no wonder you read them). And note that the map in "Top Right News" shows sanctuary cities in solid Red States like Florida and Texas, too. Are they sanctuary States, as well?

Heaven help us all! Those libruls have escaped from California! And infiltrated gawd's anointed paradise in Texas!

Tragedy that this officer lost his life. I'm sure his family would appreciate hearing your story. Good idea that your bike group donate in someway in his name. Thanks for sharing your story on here.

That is very good, sound thinking. By donating to the victims family, children, or partner, you are establishing a compassionate, positive rapport with the local police department and that your group is not an unsanctioned, rebel outfit.

Cool it with the politics. This is an inappropriate forum thread to inject politics. This is a very sad tragedy.

Kolonel Ignorant: Governor of California Jerry Brown has signed the "Trust Act" into law, making California a sanctuary state.

From the liberal approved LA Times:

Immigration activists cheer Trust Act at Hollywood rally

Under the new legislation, law enforcement officials in California who arrest immigrants in the country illegally will be prohibited from detaining them for transfer to federal authorities unless they are suspected of committing a serious crime.

The Trust Act is the second milestone bill on immigration signed by Brown this week. On Thursday, he approved a measure allowing immigrants in the country illegally to receive state driver’s licenses.

    http://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-ln-immigrant-activists-cheer-trust-act-at-hollywood-rally-20131005-story.html

There is still no such thing as a Sanctuary State, which is what I said. What the Trust Act does is allow local communities to release minor criminals from jail, as they routinely would anyway pending trial, despite Federal immigration authorities wanting them held arbitrarily because they are "suspected" of being illegal. Felony crimes and certain serious misdemeanors do not qualify under the Trust Act.

What this does is unclog a glut of jail detainees the local cities and counties were having to feed, clothe, house & guard at taxpayer expense, simply because the Federal government "thought" these detained defendants "might" be illegals, without presenting any evidence. In point of fact, some of those held for long periods without access to the courts turned out to be legal US citizens.

The Trust Act wasn't driven solely by Left Wing Latino community activitists: County Sheriffs and Chiefs of Police wanted this burden off their hands, that overcrowded their jails and strained their resources. In the case of the pier shooting, this appears to have been a case where government agencies didn't properly communicate, and the killer should not have been released under provisions of the Trust Act, nor under city ordinance.

Truly a very sad story. Also being from the area, I've seen a lot of news coverage and he was apparently a very well respected and liked colleague, husband, father and friend. A man doing his job and from what I've heard, doing it quite well. Paulflexes personal experience seems to echo what many others have reported. I believe that the anticipated attendance for his funeral ended up being so large that they moved the venue to the Oracle Arena (home of the Warriors). This says a lot about the man.

Truly a very sad tragedy and a very senseless murder of an apparently very nice man. Sorry Paul for your personal loss.

Why don't you actually learn about what it is first, before wasting your time typing incorrect information. Unless of course that IS your goal - to post incorrect information to further a political point of yours.

Were you standing in front of a mirror when you wrote that? Yah know, Paul, my personal friend, was obviously distressed by this. Why did you have to come here and crap all over his thread, like you typically do with others, for your OWN political points?

For once, this is a time for you to STFU, and simply console Paul. Not make political statements. As you did with the second post on this thread. You couldn't wait to ask: "I wonder if Estrada is here illegally." Some consolation, huh?

Yep, this certainly wouldn't qualify as empathy or consoling words:

Stop trying to throw your (considerable) weight around in an effort to bully.
Wait a minute, Art does have a valid point. This thread is the inappropriate place to inject politics. Take a long break from politics for awhile and focus on happier, more positive issues. You will feel 100% better for it seriously.

Sorry you lost your friend. He has a kind face. It really sucks when we lose our good cops.

As for Southbeach, no use letting him upset you. Asking him to be compassionate is like asking a leopard to change it's spots.

Wow, I didn't think someone would stoop so low that they'd turn someone's friend's death into a "FUCK IMMIGRANTS"-thread.

Very sorry to hear, I always love to hear stories about cops who connect with their community. Really sad to hear that one them is gone.
