Yeah gays in mainstream anime are just what you'd call "okama", they're transvetites who are, like people said, predatory.
In western comics of course, you have a lot more diversity and the gay men aren't just gimmicks but actual characters.
Of course, if we're talking about non-mainstream manga/anime it's a whole new playing field.
One side is the Boy-Love that is mostly targetted for women.
Most of them still follow a script of a very dominant, masculine, taller and stronger top and a passive, effeminate bottom. There are exceptions but most follow this norm. These tend to have more focus on the emotional connection between character rather than the sex.
The other one is Bara that's mainly targetted for gay men.
There is some more variety here, but generally these have pretty thin plots and mainly revolves around sex, much like your oridinary porn. Having a more intricate plot simply just doesn't really fit into this medium, imagine if you saw a gay porn trying to explain Descartes at the same time.
