The GOP is trapped in a downward spiral now, and only something truly catastrophic to the party's fortunes could break it out. For now, thanks to an idiosyncratic combination of (old, white) voter intensity, gerrymandering, and billionaire funding, radicalism still works for Republicans, perhaps not at the presidential level, but certainly in Congress. That's likely to continue for quite some time, rendering American democracy dysfunctional at a time when it desperately needs to act. That's depressing to lots of journalists (and to me), but getting past it begins with identifying and describing it clearly, without nostalgia or false hope.

Actually it was that right wing lunatic, James Dobson from that fanatical Focus on the Family organization that led a coup of religious right hard liners that quietly helped defeat the 1996 Presidential campaign of Senator Bob Dole, a moderate republican from Kansas. Right after the 1996 elections all the narrow minded bible thumping screwballs made James Dobson their leader and more moderate and centrist republicans were voted out of office and replaced with candidates of their ignorant ilk. I voted for Dole in 1996 in lockstep with the rest of Texas where I lived at the time. I wasn't happy with Bill Clinton whom I voted for in 1992. If Dole would have won in 1996, all the narrow minded bible thumping screwballs along with Mr. James Dobson would have been kept way out on the margins and the GOP would have never morphed into the obnoxious theocracy that it is today.

I think the right was just mortified by its image, clown status and could never be taken seriously when this man made "clown" a household name. In order to be, "taken seriously", in a sociopathic way, they had to take over the entire party, another one of their bad traits, power and CONTROL issues. Now the entire GOP is stuck with dangerous extremists for the foreseeable future. Hopefully, the American electorate will never vote one of these extremists as president, ever. As the article indicated, congress will be a major problem though, they could continue gerrymandering there way into control as they already have done

An even more insidious problem is their focus on control at the state level. ALEC, for example, writes laws to further the extreme right-wing agenda, including voter suppression laws, then shops them around the states. I predict we'll see a lot more money supporting radical conservatives being poured into state races this cycle than ever before.

both the gop and the democrats should be funding a third party that makes a show of being even MORE socially conservative and crazy (faking it), then suck up all the crazy vote. At that point the gop will be free to not self destruct as the crazies burn out, in exchange for the democrats being in power for a while. Alternatively there is going to be some shootings I can see it.
