Obama urges young African leaders to support gay rights

"the audience of young African leaders seemed to welcome Obama’s remarks against anti-gay discrimination, applauding the comments when he finished."

I really do hope that our next President can be as concerned with human rights as Obama has been.

Sure he's made some really foolish mistakes along the way (which some here will quickly point out), but the good he's done for LGBTalphabetsoupthing rights has been unprecedented.

My truth for a long time has been that we all need to make the connection between he Civil Rights act of 1964 and the need for LGBT national protections and between the Loving case and Windsor etal. But all of this stuff is about court cases and laws.

But Obama making the connection between racial oppression and slavery to discrimination and oppression of gay people all over the world is even better. People can relate to it historically and personally.

Huh. Obama has been financing the execution and imprisonment of gays in foreign countries with increased foreign aide and free trade deals.

    Walk the talk Barack.

I do not hate Obama like everyone on here thinks. He has been a fairly good President all and all despite some of the horrible blunders he has made in his administration the most obvious one was giving the Secretary of State position to the hapless Hillary ho on a silver platter and passing over far more qualified candidates. His record on human rights is quite stellar and his full inclusion of the struggle of gays, lesbians, and bisexuals for total equality under the law is very outstanding. Hopefully these young Africans continue to open their minds and evolve on gay and lesbian issues in Africa. It appears that they already are evolving and that has aging, decrepit homophobes like Mr Mugabe in Zimbabwe panicking and fuming.

Have you ever heard of lips service?

He could --- by executive order -- put and end to US christian homophobes like Scott Lively who are exporting god endorsed murder and hate to third world nations under US passports.

I don't recall him ever talking about economic sanctions or cutting off foreign aid to nations like Uganda or even Jamaica to push human rights for gays, do you?

People who attack those who are on their side end up with fewer people on their side. Our gay community should stop aiming guns at people who are fighting for us...

Thanks. I wanted to make a post like this. The Conservative/Liberatarian posse's bullshit gets too tiring sometimes.

It's almost entirely conservative white gay men who show ingratitude for all that Obama has done for gay rights. Bobbobbob has his sycophants, but he's a low character racist, and he's revealed that about himself in countless posts, scorning the black lives matter movement, and then expecting black people to respect his "heritage."icon_rolleyes.gif

And we can't blame his age. The Charleston shooter was 20.

Sadly, every president that came before Obama has been a white male, and none of them have shown the humanity that Obama has shown towards all walks of life. Obama will be remembered as the best POTUS in US history.

Obama is the most gay-positive President ever. He's probably done more to advance gay rights than any single individual in history, in terms of influencing public opinion and policy.
The vile, anti-gay conservative trolls on this site who denigrate him are not fit lick his boots.

He is gay positive after Biden forced him into. He was not always. Don't forget that.

Be very, very careful judging people for actually correcting their past mistakes. Many of us were firmly in the closet before we came out....

He's just trying to vilify Obama.

When Obama mentioned gay people in his acceptance speech in 2008 he was the first president I'd ever heard do that. And after years of thinking it was political suicide for any POTUS to mention us favorably it was like a revelation. Obama has had the gay community's back since the night he was elected, and throughout his whole presidency, and he didn't have to. We had already voted for him. He doesn't have to advocate for gay rights in Africa either. He could just be a lame duck and accept accolades, but he is a world leader, and the measure his greatness is that he sticks out for people he owes nothing to, because he has a conscience and he's doing what's right. He's a good straight man, and he has a good straight wife, and they're not oppressing gay people. It's so novel, hell hasn't even had time to freeze over yet.

Please list any president in U.S. history who has done as much for gay rights. I'll just sit here quietly and wait for you to provide this list.
