Being gay, with a UGA graduate for a pre gay legal marriage husband and in the South for most of my adult life since the late 1960s... and him having a crush on Rick Wilson that sent him in a month long depression when Rick died... We pretty much grew up on the B52s since before they called themselves the B52s.

Those were the days when they'd tour and do concerts for 'conventional' audiences and then show up at gay or seedy after-hours dance clubs to cause havoc. It was beyond description. Imagine them in the DJ booth extemporizing and harmonizing and ad libbing with dance music from that era.

Amongst my prize possessions are TWO original vinyl 78 rpm disks of Rock Lobster/B52 girls - one record has never had but one needle on it.

But then there was 1984 when Steve and I took the boys to NYC for summer vacation. They were 15 then. He was driving us through Manhattan and we came up on a theater with a marquee that said... "Jojo & 16 Screaming Niggers plus Fok (sic) singer Paul (Simon) & fags from Georgia with a rock lobster." Both of us knew who it was. Steve parked over a block away and bought tickets. That was the last time we saw Rick play... and the first time we partied like fools with boys.

One of the big hurts from the AIDS era.
The world is emptier without Rick.

Funny that you'd be the only other person in the world that I know who has this. I have everything they've ever done on vinyl, plus saw them (what's left of them) two years ago in Cleveland at Jacob's Pavilion.

Lots of fun in the very late 70s and beyond due to the B-52s. I don't think their silliness has ever been beat.

Watch Freddie's foot work at 36 secs. Hilarious, but yeah, I know who is missing in the vid.

I took a look on ebay to see if anyone is selling one of these and sure enough:

Keith Strickland said he wasn't going to tour anymore. Wonder if he's going to be there?

And if I was in LA, hell yes I'd go.

The day they were in Cleveland it was in the mid 90s and felt like 600% humidity so that sure slowed Freddie down, but all the 60 yr olds in the crowd were sure out of their seats and bopping around. Me too. I didn't sit for even one second.
