I lost a lot of weight a couple of years ago and have been working on reducing my body fat while putting on some muscle. I think I'm at a good enough fitness level that I dont have to be paranoid about putting on fat and can start bulking to increase muscle mass and strength. I know people do the whole winter bulk and summer cut thing but when exactly is the ideal time to start bulking?

This might not answer your question but it is very relative..
I literally was just reading an article in Men's Fitness on this last night and they suggested, which I agree, that it's better to stay fit year round versus bulking and cutting.

It's just way more healthy and beneficial. When you cut you lose a lot of muscle and strength that you worked hard for and it's not as healthy. Here's another article on it http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/eating_made_simple.htm

Some key notes from the article... If you really want to gain, 500 extra calories a day for over a week nets you 1lb of growth. 1000 extra calories a day gets you 2lbs of growth in a week. Anything more is considered too much too fast.

By adding size like this you put on lean muscle and never have to worry about cutting. Leave that to the 'go-hards' and professional competitors.

I'm currenly adding size like this myself and I walk around at 6-7% body fat plus still gaining size.

But to answer your question specifically... you can cut and bulk whenever you want! Most guys that really do that do it for NPC shows. so start whenever you're ready and just use that formula 500 extra calories a day gets you 1lb a week. Cutting is the same eat 500 less calories a day you will lose 1lb a week

The ONLY reason people time it out like that is because they want to be their most cut during bathing suit weather. icon_razz.gif Which I don't give a fuck about, personally. It really doesn't matter at all. Unless you care about that factor.

Start bulking when the kids go to school, start cutting 2 months before they get out, you'll be cut to ribbons by the time Summer starts.

It's difficult to gain muscle without a surplus of calories. If you are very anal, and have lots of time for food preparation and don't mind slow or maybe just slower progress. You could do it the magazine's way. I've only been successful with using the typical bulking approach. But there's a smart way to do it. First get down to about 10% body fat and then bulk up to about 18 to 20% at the most before cutting. I've found that my clients that are afraid of gaining fat and chicken out never really get big. Hope this helps and good luck bud.
