Given the behavior of some of its current presidential candidates, you’d be forgiven for assuming that the Republican Party is a haven for backward-thinking homophobes.

Rick Santorum has compared gay marriage to the terrorist attacks of September 11, and compared gay couples to those who engage in bestiality. Mike Huckabee has all but mounted a holy war against the Supreme Court for ruling in June that the freedom to marry extended to all Americans, and Scott Walker is suddenly calling for a federal constitutional amendment that allows states to ban same-sex marriage...

    Times change.

Sort of like when the Democrat party had to change its stance on Jim Crow laws. These were the post-Civil War laws passed enthusiastically by Democrats in that pesky 52-year part of the DNC's missing years. These laws segregated public schools, public transportation, restaurants, rest rooms and public places in general.

    Yes, times change.

Like when the Dixiecrats moved those Democrats into the Republican Party as the Democratic Party took on a more Progressive position under FDR, culminating with the conservative crossover in what is called the "modern Republican Party" under President Nixon.

The Democrats, as the predominant southern Southern Party, were indeed segregationist. Democrats were more Liberal in the rest of the country. Southerners hated Republicans, the Party of Lincoln and Reconstruction. The Democrats were their only choice.

But as Republicans moved more Right, and national Democrats took up the Liberal cause of Black rights under President Lyndon Johnson, southern Democrats moved even more Right and away from the rest of their Party, becoming Dixiecrats.

Republican President Richard Nixon played on this division, and the Dixiecrats eventually became Republicans. The same Republicans who dominate the Old South politically today. As anti-Black and prejudiced as they ever were.

Republicans would not post such big majority in southern states had it not been for realignment. This thread is about current issues, though and there is no way to shuffle off conservative views on gay rights off on Democrats.

Just as well the young Republicans are doing something about it, because (as RJ's conservatives tend to prove - "gay rights are well down my list of priorities") the older ones couldn't really care less.

When you hate yourself, of course your basic humanity and civil rights are not as important as licking the cracks of your homophobic Rethuglican masters.

Hopefully these young republicans are very successful in their attempted takeover of more of the power apparatus of the GOP. This is long overdue.

Oh, but you haven't. Still practicing your nuanced grasp of politics, I see. Well, have at it. Blame the Democrats for bigotry, go on.

Or read about it on the GOP's platform. Go ahead, read it (page 38 of the PDF): https://cdn.gop.com/docs/2012GOPPlatform.pdf

No he is not joking, he is stating historic facts. Why do all you extremist liberal hens get all bent out of shape when the history of your beloved Democratic Party is exposed including the several decades when the democratic blue was the total opposite of today's organization. It is the democrats who originally helped the religious right gain their political power. The democrats of back than were most likely more racist, anti Semitic, homophobic, and xenophobic than the right wingers of today. However I keep forgetting that you extremist liberal hens will only admit and embrace the truth when it suits your case. Otherwise forget about it. Go figure.
