Interesting video. I wonder if my homophobic Christian family would come to the same realization if experiencing what this man did.

Very doubtful, but not impossible. He did what he did because he already realized his inner empathy. If your family realizes that then there's a chance.

As for my family there's no hope. I've been out for over 20 years and still get reminded of "those six verses" from time to time. I've pretty much disowned my entire family (though they won't disown me) and only have contact with my mom and my nephew.

'Overnight I ceased to exist. The vast majority of my community closed their doors on me that day, and it felt as though I had died.’

I was raised evangelical Christian and can identify with the above statement. Half of my family doesn't speak to me much anymore. My mother told me it's hard because we don't have much in common anymore.
Coming out was still worth it.

Sad. I would think your parents would be proud of having a doctor for a son...

If they ever need medical advice, suggest blood letting. Sounds like that would be up to their speed.

Totally agree on the empathy bit. It's not so much about intelligence or ignorance as much as it is about the ability to care enough to not people feel like shit or kick people who are down.

Let me guess, you grew up in the ultra conservative hamlet of Spencerport which is 15 miles west of Rochester off NY Route 31. Most religious right organizations upstate New York operations appear to be based in this tiny, unincorporated hamlet on the New York Barge Canal. Must be something in the drinking water that causes the narrow minded bible thumping screwballs to coagulate in and around Spencerport NY. icon_wink.gif
