Federal authorities in New York City have shut down online male escort service Rentboy.com and arrested the chief executive and six current and former employees on prostitution charges.

Prosecutors announced the charges Tuesday against CEO Jeffrey Hurant and the other defendants. Disclaimers on New York-based Rentboy.com had said its listings were for companionship and not for sexual services. But a federal complaint unsealed Tuesday in federal court in Brooklyn alleges that in reality the site, founded in 1997, was designed to advertise prostitution.

I read in another article that they charge $60 a month just to be a member on the web site. That's a lot. The web site seems to be down. I'm sure that we have people here that are members...What do you get for $60?

I feel bad for all those people working on that web site...they just lost their source of income without any warning. Well, hopefully their regular customers will help them.

Rentboy.com CEO: ‘I Think We Do Good Things’

"Writer Dan Savage was one of many who stepped forward to criticize the move to prosecute Rentboy.com, writing on his blog, “Since when did it become the Department of Homeland Security’s job to protect gay and bi men from buying and selling blowjobs?” The DHS was the main federal actor in yesterday’s raid."

Why is the Department of Homeland Security involved with this?

Oh damn. I was going to rent a guy to accompany me to the church picnic. icon_cry.gif

But seriously, prostitution is ILLEGAL, so this should be of no surprise to anyone.

Illegality of something doesn't automatically make it intrinsically wrong, Scruffy. Look at the state of Louisiana where you live. Anti-sodomy laws are still upheld (along with eleven other backwards US states).

A law is a law, right? So every time your heels soar to heaven just know that technically speaking you are breaking the law.

I don't wear high heels, so I think that MEME is more related to your activities than mine.

There are many laws I disagree with, drug laws being one of many. But I happen to agree with anti-prostitution laws. Understandably you do not since you have already disclosed to being a prostitute yourself. Living in New Orleans, I have seen first hand the mental/emotional destruction of prostitutes as well as those who are reduced to paying for them. I interact with prostitutes on a daily basis so I have a grounded basis for my opinion. Nothing good comes from prostitution. Absolutely nothing. I don't expect you to agree with me. Let's just simply agree to disagree on this subject, shall we?

The fact that Homeland Security is spending time and resources prosecuting an escort ad site goes to show how little the Patriot Act had to do with national security -- and how egregiously sweeping its non security-related powers are.

If, as speculated in this thread, Rentboy hadn't paid its taxes and had been audited and subject to penalties and maybe even criminal charges, that could be appropriate. But the IRS would handle that situation, not Homeland Security, an agency which, by the way, hasn't even been around as long as Rentboy, which has been hiding in plain sight since 1997.

An advertiser I know -- well, now former advertiser, I guess -- told me he suspects some high-ranking government official(s) got scared after the Ashley Madison hack and didn't want to take a chance that they'd be exposed as clients. That could explain the "why now?" of this abuse of power and colossal waste of Homeland Security's clearly bloated resources.

It'll be interesting to see what their case is and how it holds up. Contrary to reports, it was not a "male escort service," which is what it would be if it was an agency arranging appointments and taking a cut of the fee. It was simply a site that ran ads; the clients contacted the escorts and arranged things themselves. Rentboy had no way of knowing the outcome of any given appointment that resulted from people connecting through its ads; seems a good lawyer could draw sharp distinctions between that and an agency, let alone a pimp.

Rent boy produced revenue for a lot of escorts who could safely and discreetly advertise. That being said it was also plagued with escorts who weren't even gay but would rather rob their clients. I have read several horror stories from DC, Miami etc from men finding an escort on rent boy and then having the escort tell them their not going to do any of the things advertised and then steal their money. One guy was even assaulted.
These are just some of the stories I read and heard. I am sure the police have much more complaints. In addition rent boy wouldn't be able to verify any of the escorts so you could just arrange to meet someone and have a totally different person surprise you at the door. lol
However I am sure a lot of people have had positive experiences on there and will miss their services.

I guess the next step is to take the server to another country or place where you can advertise legally.

Well, to be honest I tried to comb the internet for a guy with muscular, hairy legs flailing in the air but it just didn't seem possible. However, when I saw the one I used I thought it would be funny. icon_lol.gif

Let's make it clear, I was an escort back in my mid thirties. It's been nearly ten years since I did that line of work. You, along with your bestest buddy "Gavyita666 like to distort what I say in an attempt to belittle who I am today. It's getting old and you're not clever for perpetuating falsities. I'm sure you had more than one job. Are people calling you this or that for doing a job you did ten years ago? No. But, because of doing that line of work back then I had a lot of exposure to other escorts in the past as well. So my opinion is also valid.

If I'm not mistaken, you interact with prostitutes in some environment that is some type of crisis-related management program. So yes, naturally the ones you interact with are going to be people who have obvious struggles. Your experience will be darker than most others'.

I can say this. Most escorts who fall into the trap of drugs and depression and who spiral out of control would do so regardless if they prostituted or not. The ones who do not just get by and do their thing, make their money and move on with life. I knew many gay escorts back in the day when I did this line of work. There were more of them that had it together than the victim ridden image you like to perpetuate.

I could be like you and go to a hospital and work in a specific ward. And from my unique experience I could make impassioned claims such as, "HIV ravages and kills!" "Cancer ravages and kills!" and so on. But we all know that in many cases disease isn't a death sentence and thankfully many of these folks manage themselves quite well.

You're reading WAY more into my post than I intended. First of all, I'm not judging you for what you've done in the past. Everyone has their reasons for doing what they do, including me. Just because I don't think it's emotionally healthy doesn't mean I'm here to judge you. And I'm not sure where you got the idea that I work with prostitutes. I interact with them frequently simply because a lot of them live and work in my neighborhood.

Homeland Security’s Peculiar Prosecution of Rentboy

"Prosecutors can credibly argue that the site’s operators were breaking the law. But they have provided no reasonable justification for devoting significant resources, particularly from an agency charged with protecting America from terrorists, to shut down a company that provided sex workers with a safer alternative to street walking or relying on pimps. The defendants have not been accused of exploiting sex workers, featuring minors on the website, financial crimes or other serious offenses that would warrant a federal prosecution."

I hate the US Government in all its butchery of the Bill of Rights and oh how I loath the Nazification of America with "Homeland," hitherto a Nazi term used in Germany under Adolf Hitler, and prior to 9/11, one hardly ever used in the USA, but then we get the "Department of Homeland Security."

What a farce. Government is a farce. The "enumerated powers" are right there in the US Constitution, and all else is usurpation and overreach. Government now manufactures its own authority and is tyrannical on so many levels.

I'm all for legalizing prostitution. I'm all for ending the black market of drugs and legalizing all drugs (though I'd advocate people don't take them). Legalization of narcotics would end a hugely lucrative black market for which the CIA, the largest drug cartel in North America would suffer greatly. Gotta love how the CIA plane crashes always have a cargo rammed full of cocaine, heroine, and other "illegal" substances. Yep, kept illegal on purpose, to keep the price high and to keep out the competition. Headlines slip in here and there from the moneychanger owned media revealing US and British military guarding (from destruction) poppy fields in Afghanistan. You just can't make this stuff up.

Well damn, there goes my great new career opportunity on such a prevalent site (I assume the largest of its kind for men seeking men).
