With Table Mountain recently being added as the 'Eighth Wonder' of the World. It is not surprising that Travel Magazine has now voted South Africa as being the World's No. 1 travel destination. With Cape Town topping the list due to it's wide range of culture, B&B's and some of the finest Hotels. Durban coming in second, followed by Port Elizabeth. South Africa is a World all in one, with a range of Fauna and Flora as well as differing mountain ranges and nature at it's best. The Kruger National Park is home to many wildlife, and Tourists visit this destination in their thousands annually. Proudly South African!

Spectacular scenery! They even have mountain bike tours (just looked it up).

Instead of a tour, I'd rather hook up with locals and just go ride. But I definitely wanna go ride there. I bet they have some totally badass downhill sections.

Isn't there a serious crime problem in SA with a high murder rate?

I viisted last Sept for 12 days between Johannesburg and Capetown. Joburg has a conspicuous homeless population downtown, but I was perfectly at ease doing my own solo walking tour. If you do the hop-on/hop-off tour, definitely take the extension tour to Soweto. http://www.southafrica.info/travel/cities/soweto.htm#.VeJVAvlVhHw

Capetown has the vibe of San Francisco or Rio -- great food, lots of international tourists, fabulous scenery and multiple side trips to amazing places. Must see the Cape of Good Hope and, as already mentioned, Table Mountain. Garden fans can get lost at the Kirstenbosch Gardens http://www.sanbi.org/gardens/kirstenbosch

    GO!

Seriously? I'd rather go to France, be it Paris or the Charente, Aquitane or of course Provence!

Have been several times. Cape Town and environs are great. Anyone going there should check out a show by satirical gay comedian Pieter-Dirk Uys - either at his stage in Darling or in Capetown. Not to be missed.

But NB, keep your wits about you when hiking on Table Mountain or to nearby beaches - there is still a significant amount of armed robbery of unsuspecting tourists. Don't hike alone, and don't take valuables with you.

When I last read, Chicago and Mexico have the highest murder rates. South Africa has the highest death rate due to road accidents

When planning to go (for those of us in the Northern hemisphere - which is most of RJ), remember that seasons are reversed - and research the best time of year there for what you want to see - animals in northern parks - spring wildflowers in August/September - Cape Town summer temperatures in our winter - etc.

icon_idea.gif I know why a mountain is named, table. Could be 3 or 4 times wider of Butte at Monument Valley from Arizona.
This mountain is mountable than any other mountains on earth. icon_surprised.gif Flora from back and on table mountain displays a sense of graceful, just watch the view. icon_biggrin.gif Plus, ride on icon_cool.gifcable car is a must.
