There's Got to Be a Better Way to Roommate Hunt Than CL

I'm looking to move within the next month or so and my experience roommate hunting on CL in NYC has been less than stelar: people who seem generally "off", nutty old cat ladies renting out their spare room, roach infested apartments (one guy lied when I asked about pests, opened up a kitchen cabinet just to make sure and a roach came falling out, etc.... Even met a homophobe who back peddled on his stance on overnight visitors when I said I was gay and said "I don't have a problem with gays but don't bring any guys back here." Seriously?

The best way to get decent roommates is through friends supposedly but with no real friends I'm stuck with crazy CL which makes me think the better option is to just move home for a while. There's got to be a better way to hunt for gay friendly roommates.

I don't think you would want David3K for a roommate, even if he weren't 6,000 miles away. Maybe there are other online sources besides CL in New York. Try googling around for one. (Everyone here uses CL, but cities are different.) Old-fashioned notes on bulletin boards at gay gyms, etc?

If you can afford it, you would have more control over roommates if you rented a place, and then advertised for roommates. In SF, you would get 100's of responses right away, because housing is so tight.

He's not homophobic. He's closeted and the jealous type. He wants you, and only you, to be his dirty little secret. icon_wink.gif

    What does your ad say?

When I put an ad in CL for a roommate I also checked for people who wanted a room.

I provided 4 pics of my place and a "G" rated one of me, and that I was Gay. Small pet was OK. And absolutely no drugs.

My first roommate was a flake. he did do drugs, wrecked my new Berber carpet in the Bedroom, generally a low life.

But the next three were great! Joan and Damien are still friends. Be selective, they are always good people out there.

Can you just move to Astoria or Flushing, lower cost alternatives to Manhattan?

Are you one of those really cheap room hunters claiming to be a professional but unwilling to pay a fair price for the area? I gave up on looking for a roommate because im not subsidising some dudes life.

Holy cow, I can't believe you found someone like that in NYC. I honestly had a lot of luck with CL when I lived there. The WORST experience I ever had was with a friend - never again.

Have you tried any other sites, like roommates.com, spareroom, etc?

a person currently renting confided he could pay with just one room mate but lives with two. A backup room mate.

Make sure they are on the lease and you have a written agreement who contributed to the security deposit and other costs.

ask to call his previous room mate
