Comcast Monopoly is Unveiling its Latest Customer Scam: Data Caps on Internet Service

According to the new policy, customers who exceed 300 GB a month will have to pay overage charges of $10 per 50 GB tier. If customers want capless internet service, they have to pay $30 more a month.

From what I understand the US is pretty unique in that home internet use is not metered. IIRC most telecoms in Europe are quasi-public and in some cases part of the post office, and everything is metered.

If this is true that free ride may be over for us :/. I guess they need to compensate for the fact that so many people have ditched pay TV and are using the streaming services exclusively.

I used to watch a series on USA Network on line, until a few weeks ago when the new season started up, I was going to watch the first new one of the season, it kept stalling out and so I just turned it off, and then tried a few days later only to find out that I have to log in with my Comcast password and when I did, I was told that it was not a part of my subscription so I could watch it.

Trying to rationalize anything being done in the US because it is done in Europe is the same rationale a little boy uses pleading with his mother to ride his bike across a six lane highway by saying, "but Tommy's mother let's him do it."

In Europe people tolerate taxes on windows, bricks, hearths and even out door and restaurant wedding celebrations. Most nations have Value Added Taxes on purchases over 20%. My 88 year old mother moved back to France 24 years ago. She would have had to pay 45% tax on her retirement as a US school teacher if we had not found a convenient legal means to dodge it. Due to odd taxes in France and her village I can buy five bottles of local wine for less than a 1.5 liter bottle of diet coke (which they only order one at a time if I pay in advance.)

I don't see what Net Neutrality has to do with it... Comcast made $2B in the first quarter of 2014; they are not in a dire position of having to charge someone more money in order to survive. They could instead charge a fair price and actually provide decent service; they just choose not to, and since in most markets there are only 2-3 choices at most for TV and internet, you have no choice but to continue to pay them.

Comcast is like all these other fortune 500s, they are cold hearted and greedy. They don't give a shit about what type or quality of programming that they put on the air. They are still going to make you pay for crap until you get fed up and cut the cord and tell them to shove it up their ass. Their arrogance and excessive greed is a compelling reason to jack up the taxes on these rich, bloated bastards.icon_mad.gif

Makes sense. Data hogs should pay more.
