The Chairman and CEO of United Airlines, Jeff Smisek, and two other top officials resigned from their jobs yesterday as a federal probe continues into the airline's dealings with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which operates Newark Liberty International Airport.

Central to the investigation is the company's relationship with former PA Chairman David Samson. It has surfaced that United operated a twice-weekly service between Newark and Columbia, South Carolina which basically functioned as Samson's private jet to and from his vacation home. The flights, which Charleston airport officials told the feds United made no effort to market to the public, began shortly after Samson's appointment and were discontinued within days of his ouster as part of the "Bridgegate" scandal. United does not serve Columbia from Newark otherwise, and the flights were referred to by personnel as "the chairman's plane".

Meanwhile, Smisek was paid over $4m to walk away.

Nah, I'd want the entire $4m. Half that wouldn't even put a downpayment on the private jet I want. icon_cool.gif
