Gay, Celibate Man Is Official Face Of LGBT Catholicism For Pope's Visit
Ron Belgau is the only openly gay person invited to speak at the World Meeting of Families.

I'm not surprised that the liberals revile this man for his celibacy, or that conservatives reject him for not being tough enough on [against?] "his own kind." IMHO, they're both wrong; celibacy's a completely legitimate option, and just how much can one advocate against those who share his own feelings and emotions? (Pace, armchair/community college shrinks; we've heard enough of your harebrained, half-baked psychobabble about "self-loathing.") They should BOTH butt out of his life, and instead listen to what he has to say, along w/ the rest of us. Kudos to the Pope for affording a forum to him; this has not been done before, and there are still A LOT of Catholics who've never even met, let alone listened to, a gay man.

Most of them HAVE met plenty of gay Catholics. They're just of the closeted variety. What this man does with his genitals is his affair. But I don't find anything compelling about what anyone in the Catholic Church has to say. Pope Francis et al are just window dressing. Until the church drops the dogma that we are fundamentally disordered it's the same church with destructive ideas in a prettier package. Thanks but no.

Did you ever consider that starting a discussion is the first step towards dropping a dogma? People are free to listen or ignore at will, but for those of us w/ at least a passing interest in Catholicism - and that's about the extent of mine, thanks to too many encounters w/ sanctimonious nuns and hypocritical priests - this will be interesting and I'm all ears.

Starting a discussion? Really! Because they don't already know the score? Bullshit.

How curious that you'd so quickly swipe at some 18 year old kid acting up, expecting him to be already fully mature but then you give a pass on a 2000 year old religion which--call me impatient but it seems to me--has had more than enough time to figure things out.

The Catholic Church can go fuck itself.

How is: "And with your spirit" a pun in the context of that post? I do know my Latin, I was schooled in it. And not just as a poll-parroting altar boy.

I'm tempted to say something negative to conform to the RJ mindset, but instead I'll just say this is a step in the right direction for the Catholic church.

Firstly, it's not a dogma of the Church.

Secondly, I don't believe the Church's teaching is that homosexuals are "fundamentally disordered" but that homosexual ACTS are INTRINSICALLY disordered. This means that by their very nature they are disordered, which is deeper than fundamentally. I know some of you will see this as semantics but there is a difference between fundamentally and intrinsically. IMO intrinsically is worse.

From a heterosexual POV it's easy to see how homosexuality can be seen as abnormal/disordered. And I'm afraid no matter how much science shows that our homosexuality is intrinsic to our nature, the Church will continue to see the acts of homosexuality disordered.

I'm not expecting any great changes in Church teaching anytime soon. Definitely not in my lifetime.

What pisses me off is so many priests and nuns are gay...

We have met the enemy and he is us.

As it is to one it is to the other. Bullshit. The grand poobah of pretention insinuating that church is beyond judgment, that my denouncement of it by its own actions somehow reflects back upon me. An interesting complaint from a guy whose fat head doesn't even fit in a mirror...

Neither you nor, predictably, Artless "got it." See, Wiki re: the nonliteral, updated liturgical, translation of what I wrote. A little knowledge, even in Latin, is a dangerous - or in this case, embarrassing - thang. Now, bite your lip and let the tattooist finish his/her handiwork.

Francis does what he can. Even a pope has to be careful with personal notions of reform. Francis has been the most "common man" cleric in a VERY long time...am surprised the cardinals haven't agreed to assassinate him yet.

You may know your Latin, but you apparently don't know the more recent adaption of the phrase by the Catholic and several leading Protestant churches: "And also w/ you." It equally applies to no-name's subsequent raging.

And also with you is exactly what I originally commented upon when I said it stands alone, you fucking moron, that it is not also with me who did not dehumanize str8s as they dehumanized gays, duh! And how I reiterated when you accused me of not being tall enough to see it when I said to you that your saying what I said about the church reflects upon me does not. If you read back, you'll recall that's when we tried to fit your fat head in a mirror. For a guy with a reasonably sufficient IQ, you are stupid as fuck. So god damned blinded by your over-inflated tummy ego that you can't even see that as you accuse another of your minor wit having gone over his head, you'd already been successfully counter attacked from higher up in the direction of the sun, your classically trained antiquated battleship already sunk. Swim pool turd swim.

Right, the pompous pus wrongly accusing others of being wrong calls bitterbus when he's shown what a fool he's been lolol. Dude, that wasn't me being unhappy, though you must admit I dashed off a fun vignette there. I was laughing at your pathetic ass. lolol, um, I mean, I was just trying to help you along so you wouldn't be such a schmuck into what little might remain of your future. They don't call me the man of la mancha for nothin' ya know.

    To Dream The Impossible Dream

    To fight the pathetic foe
    To bear his unbearable folly
To run before he accidently sits on ya

To right the fundamentalist right wingers
To love after I've gotten drunk enough to forget this encounter
To try when your arms are too weary
    To expose your unfathomable lies

This is my quest, to expose your hypocrisies
No matter how full of shit or pompous you are
To fight for the right, skeptical always
To be willing to march into Hell to watch you & your friends burn

    And roast there some marshmallows,
assuming you haven't scarfed them all up already
That my heart will lie peaceful, while yours undergoes a bypass.

And the world will be better for this
That one fat man, covered in his own unjustified scorn of others and in his own scars self inflicted and in his own vomit for all I give a flying fuck
That he tried to inflict upon his betters
But only managed to step upon those who put up with his shit

This is my quest, to help you find for others and maybe even yourself some empathy
No matter how hopeless, no matter what a farce you are
To fight for the right, because I had a free moment
To be willing to march into hell to tell you I told you soooo.

And I know if I'll only be true to this glorious quest
That my heart will lie peaceful and calm when I'm laid to my rest

And the world will be better for this
That one man, who shrugged off your shit
Still strove with his last ounce of courage
    To reach the unreachable bliss

    apologies to lyricist Joe Darion

Basically their position on this is similar with the LDS Church. After the prop 8 documentary came out, the church tried to "open door" for GLBT Mormon, but they have to take celibacy.

If you are celibate (rather than just lazy), you are not really gay, you are Asexual, and hardly qualify to represent the gay population.

One can be gay and be celibate. But the Bible states it's a gift given by God, that most don't have (1 Corinthians 7). Aside from just assuming all gays are capable of being celibate, I'm not sure how the Church deals with that one. If everyone is capable of being celibate, heterosexuals should be doing it too, since Paul says it's better in order to focus on God.

Oh really? Perhaps you could bring that as a motion to the HRC Bd. of Directors at its next Imperial Council Conclave. That way, we'll have an official pronouncement stating exactly who's gay, who isn't, and who can "represent the gay community." Sheesh! icon_rolleyes.gif
