Two of my best friends have relocated to Atlanta Georgia recently, and are having a tough time finding free/cheap events/things to do. They are very outdoor oriented and kayak and hike, but haven't really found a group of friends.

Can anyone suggest a good resource for stuff going on in the area, or an outdoors club of some sort? In LA we have a weekly newsletter called "We Like LA" which posts a handful of off-the-beaten path things going on each day of the week, does Atlanta have something comparable?

Thank you for any suggestions. They're in Atlanta to stay, and I want them to be happy.

    Ps. they're a straight couple

Honestly, Atlanta is the second most pretentious city I've ever been to. (Dallas is the only city that can top their attitude and flakiness.) I am a little relieved to hear they're straight, hoping the straight community might be a little less douchey than the gays there. icon_neutral.gif

Have them check BeltLine.org, they have a weekly fitness schedule (yoga, kickball leagues, that sort of thing) around the new BeltLine trail that not only will help them stay active but meet some fun and interesting people quickly.

Also, it's no longer "cheap" but Music Midtown is coming up soon at Piedmont Park. Technically, it is cheap if you go to many of the concerts they offer. A good alternative is the Atlanta Greek Festival which is cheap (a few bucks for entry) with great food and I believe is next week.

Our alt-weekly is called Creative Loafing. They can check CL's website or paper for the "Happenings" section, which is usually well updated with events and group meetups.
