I know the lunge is a really good exercise for the legs. The problem is, everytime I do lunges I end up so sore and stiff I can hardly walk for a week. It doesn't matter if I perform the exercise holding only 20 lbs. dumbells. The ironic part is that I can leg press 180 lbs., but can never perform this simple exercise without getting hurt.
