Does anyone know about this? So from my understanding that it's used for non HIV people to take before they have bareback sex, and it helps them prevent getting the virus. A friend of mine told me about it as he was thinking of getting on the pill and I guess felt the need to share it.

I'm a bit curious if this PrEP thing is actually safe or is it just going to lead healthy males to their doom?

Prep is not a free pass to have bareback sex with random strangers. Seems a lot of gay dudes are under this impression. It won't protect you from other STDs. And has something like a 90% effectiveness against HIV. It's intended to be used along with condoms. 10% is still a pretty large margin for risk.

If you want to be on Prep, you need to take it regularly. It's not like you pop a pill before you go out and hit the bars. Or the morning after, when you discovered your hookup dumped his load in your ass.

There were a few previous discussions here on the topic, but they quickly went to shit like most threads here. icon_lol.gif

EDIT: Came back to this thread a few days later and there's drama. icon_lol.gif

It is not necessarily for guys to take before barebacking. icon_rolleyes.gif Yes, a lot of guys who bareback do take it but many people take it as another layer of protection.

It's pre-cautionary measure that is a good idea, but by no means one for guys to just go out and ho it up in the streets.

I've turned down guys on PrEP who wanted me to bareback them and shoot a load. The thought of doing that is just gross, blech.

I agree that this isn't something that should be used as an excuse to bb. I told my friend it's kinda like a birth control pill, but you better not forget to take it. I'm just worried that my acquaintance is going to end up in a bad position later down the line if he just uses this as his means of a condom.

is it really worth taking $12,000 worth of drugs per year with questionable effects on your liver and kidneys just to get fucked in the ass by someone(s) you don't even know?

    Ummmm.......It's FREE in the U.S. icon_confused.gif

And ALL drugs have potential side effects, even aspirin. I've yet to meet anyone who's experienced any side effects from Truvada. You're required to get bloodwork done every 30 days for the first 3 months to make sure you're not having any side effects. In fact, you can't get your prescription refilled without your bloodwork. One of the best things about PrEP is you have to get HIV tests regularly to be on it which is obviously a very good thing. So where we used to have a lot of people running around not knowing their status (and barebacking), now these same people are required to get tested and know their status. Seems like a win-win to me.

I think every gay man should be on PrEP. It's a no-brainer.

This is what I was thinking. It costs a lot less to use condoms and be selective about sleeping around than it does to take medication.

Both of my doctors (one is an infectious disease specialist) told me the studies show a success level of close to 100% if taken daily. I think every gay man should be on PrEP. It's a no-brainer.

oh I see, every gay man should take $12,000 - $15,000 worth of drugs per year AND get blood tests every month AND get HIV tested 5-6 times a year - just so you can get fucked in a bath house by strangers

you are completely and utterly insane

(not that there have been any long-term studies done on the adverse effects on your kidneys and liver - I mean 6-8 year studies, not some nonsense 2 -3 year study)

and you want these people in their 20's taking it for 50-60 years huh?

    you're a fool (at best)

Hey no need to insult. But yeah, even when citizens get 'free' stuff someone always pays for that, through taxes or whatever but nothing is free.

sonofyoda saidHas anybody ever wondered why they're pushing these types of drugs onto gay men only and not other populations like straight people? As if gay men haven't been guinea pigs for decades. Has it really become that bad where people are willing to forget all the other possible safe options to take some pill that has damaging side effects on internal organs to make catch one std out of many? It seems like the only safest option is to not have sex at all or at least to find someone who wants to date and stay committed to you. Has things really gotten that bad?

HIV is way more common among the gay community than straight. In fact gays are the only group where HIV infection rates keep increasing.

Gays have a fetish with "getting loads" inside their butts, they focus on bareback sex on purpose. That doesn't happen in the straight community, the woman is not like "give me your cum!", it just happens because either they're too horny or irresponsible to wear a condom and usually the worst scenario is the woman gets pregnant, a complete different story than gays.

I know how to read very well, thank you very much. Assuming that PrEP is free, it still is easier to use condoms and be selective than it is to take a regimen of medication. I'm not a fan of taking medicine when you don't have to take it.

Hm, I don't see how taking a PrEP pill for the rest of your life is any different then taking HIV medication for the rest of your life.

I agree, but what's the use in comparing that?
Negative people dont have to take any medication, unless they want to take PrEP as an extra protection during hook ups.

HIV+ people have no other option than to take meds.

Anyways, no strong drug is harmless to the human body, either HIV meds or PrEP, they all fuck with your organism one way or another. Let alone after years of use.

This is just your anecdotal personal observation, of course. icon_rolleyes.gif

HIV drugs don't "age" a person faster. That's just downright ridiculous.

Well I deleted that right after I posted it, you were too fast, whatever. But I could link to several youtube videos of HIV+ people telling the "truth behind living with HIV and taking meds", how after years they fucked them up. I remember this girls saying "Im 40 but my organism is of a 55 years old because of the drugs".

We have a product in South Africa called 'Prep', it used for shaving rashes, minor burns and insect bites. Funny they would name a spermicide the same name. I still say, if you are unsure of your Hookup or partners HIV status, rather use a condom.

It's so funny watching 250,000,000 dumb, fat, irresponsible, diabetic, hypertensive, depressed, ADHD Americans talking about their "free" drugs
