Got Our Flu Shots Today

We each got our flu shot this afternoon. From the pharmacy in the supermarket where we were food shopping. The same "Publix" where I ran across the woman with a live skunk draped over her shoulder when we arrived, about which I posted another RJ thread tonight.

First time we tried this approach, we wanted the shots quickly, and our primary doctor can take a while for an appointment. This is walk-in, and also free like at our doctor. We're automatically given a double-strength dose because of our being over 65, since age naturally weakens the immune system.

If there's gonna be any unpleasant side effects this year we'll likely feel them more profoundly than younger people given half our dose, and I'll let you guys know here if we develop them. Although I haven't had a problem since the 1970s-early'80s, when the vaccine was less refined, giving me a mild cold and a sore arm.

We wanted them early because I just realized that with our next Key West trip coming up in November I needed us protected in time. Lots of visitors go there from around the country and also international ones, potentially exposing us to contagious people. We'll be there long enough that if we were to catch it early on we might fall ill before we drive back, a miserable and even risky consequence.

Obviously we continue to endorse getting an annual flu shot by all those who are eligible.

Well, 2 days later and no arm soreness, no cold symptoms or other discomfort for either of us. And that's with the double-strength dose that seniors get.

I'd scream, too, if I lost all my teeth. That's a frightening vaccine side effect I didn't know about.
