I took the Rainbow Flag & bleached it til all the colors turned all white & titled the Duchampian piece "Whitewashed". It creates a dialogue with Jasper Johns's "White Flag" & perfectly symbolizes & points out the apparent discrepancy in our community & how we in the LGBT world see other LGBTs as "the other" based on their age, race, weight, physical challenges, etc...."Whitewashed" undermines what the Rainbow Flag stands for---the erasure of color & differences. As Madonna would say: "It's Rebel Art that speaks the Truth." In your conditioned mind, if u saw a whitewashed rainbow flag hanging in an art gallery/museum, what would your reaction to it be?

0ne of my songs---"Your Light" perfectly sums up my "Whitewashed" artpiece. One of the chorus parts goes:

    Where's your Empathy?
    Where's your Diversity?
    Where's your Humanity?
    Where's your Plurality?
    Where's your Divinity?

Someone needs to replace that old flag.

Sounds like someone is projecting. I know plenty of white gay people, and plenty of gays of all sorts of colors and dimensions and not a single on has ever expressed racist rhetoric. Maybe it is you who is surrounded by morons and losers. Take a moment and look deeply into a mirror.

The gay and lesbian community is no different from straight communities, they all have their good and bad, lovers and haters, scholars and rejects, etc.

The idea behind what it symbolizes is brilliant & seminal. As an artist I'm pointing out a discrepancy in the LGBT world. It's a perfectly valid Duchampian piece. It's a gay twist on Jasper John's "White Flag"---the erasure of color & differences. If u were familiar with the OP's oeuvre you'd see how talented he is icon_smile.gif

We all have our life experiences in how we've been treated. Your dismissiveness & blindness is typical.

Same with me. With one exception ever.

We liked this White gay couple who live here, took some vacations with them. One was a self-described redneck raised in Louisiana, but with scads of money, a $10,000 monthly trust fund in addition to his own considerable income, and nearly 1000 acres of prime land in the Bayou State he used as a hunting retreat.

His partner is a PhD Professor with his own comfortable income. So not shabby people in that regard.

Yet the Louisiana guy started using the N-word with us after we'd known them for a while, and making clear how much he despised Blacks and any non-Whites and immigrants in very graphic terms. Including our cleaning lady, and their own, as well.

We were shocked. We didn't know this was the kinda guy we had been associating with. His partner said nothing, neither agreeing nor disagreeing, completely silent. Maybe he thought it wasn't important, or he had other reasons to maintain a profitable relationship between them, I dunno.

But we did have an issue, and soon severed our contact with them. We will not tolerate racism by our friends. Reveal yourself as a racist and you are no longer our friend. But this episode did teach us that racism can exist among White gays. And it can be very strong & ugly.

That's Jasper Johns. This is my gay Duchampian take on it.

Actually, the white gay guys that i'VE MET have been extremely racist. The first one rejected me because of the colour of my skin outright, and the white male members of the LGBT community at my university actively separate themselves from the rest of the members - they stand in a corner and socialise only with each other. Weirdly enough, it's only the guys, not the girls.

We're all so conditioned. Microcosm/macrocosm---the parts make the inherent sum total. Let's start with the parts (ourselves)....Each blade of grass & grain of sand makes a difference....

Thanks. But credit my dear partner as well, it was our mutual decision to drop these guys.

And I think he feels this personally. He grew up in a Boston suburb a decade before me, and experienced the discrimination common at that time against Italians. He always says he lived in an Italian ghetto, isolated from the WASP'ish New Englanders.

It's for that reason I fawn over his Italian heritage, and especially his cooking. Which really is wonderful. I make jokes with him about his Italian family, who are so typical, and we both laugh, because he agrees. And laugh as well at my northern European ancestors (plus admire both families as well), for all their own silly cultural behaviors.

To love people is to recognize and love their differences, especially those from yourself.

Why isn't there a TV Series called White-ish?
Which month is White Heritage Month?
Whose part of the White Congressional Caucus?
Why is there no United White College Fund?
Why is there no White Entertainment Network?
Why does waving a White Flag indicate surrender?

The tv series should be called White-Out icon_smile.gif

Aren't most tv series/programming & movies as white as can be already?

A gay friend of mine who spent few months in Australia said that the only place he got to hear racist/xenophobic rhetoric in Australia was when he hanged out among the white gays.

As an artist I would be frustrated that I've spent my entire life honing my skills and now find it hard to get work shown, only to walk into coffee shops and galleries and see felt glued to a board or your hypothetical bleached flag.

As a white man I would say be very careful with that broad brush... Calling people you've never met racist is the literal definition of prejudice.
