maybe it was part of his training and is what allowed him to consume 12,000 calories a day.

maybe not "allowed" him to consume 8000 calories a day so much as "motivated" him to consume 8000 calories a day. icon_wink.gif

Given the source of this, I don't think it has much credibility.

When I think of a pothead, it's someone who smokes regularly, and there's no way a pothead could be olympic champion of anything. All medal winners are tested for doping, and cannabis is in your system for quite a while (it's still on the doping list even if it's not really performance enhancing in most sports, I guess it's more of a moral question).

However, if someone's smoking a few times a year off season, is probably not worse than drinking alcohol once in a while. There's still the risk of getting caught by unannouced doping tests though.

I showed the picture to my housemate - we both think it doesn't really look like him.

A four-year ban from participating in Olympic sports, as cited in the article, seems harsh for someone who may take one toke from a bong. And, if Phelps is really a pothead as the eyewitnesses were suggesting, wouldn't his activities show up in a drug test?

This seems a little implausible to my untrained investigative eye.

I like this quote from one of the online "sources"

    Via http://www.postchronicle.com/news/original/article_212204548.shtml:

Phelps Inc is taking a hit as British tabloid News of the World have posted a photograph of Phelps apparently doing bong hits back in November 2009. The incident took place at a house party near the University of South Carolina.

I guess they time-traveled to November 2009 to catch future bong-hitters in action!icon_lol.gif

    Update:
"Phelps apologizes for 'bad judgment' after marijuana photo":

The first time snowboarding was a demonstration sport at the Winter Olympics, the gold medallist was Ross Rebagliati from Whistler, BC, in 1998. He was found to have marijauna in his system and the medal was taken away from him; a tribunal later gave it back on the basis that it's not a performance-enhancing drug.

In fact, I think he deserved an extra medal for just having the drive to get up off the couch and turn the cartoons off. I mean, have you guys been to Whistler? Most visitors probably have enough pot in their system to test positive by the time they check in at their hotel.

The most angering story of the week.

OH NO! Michael Phelps smokes pot!

OH NO! Michael Phelps gets trashed!

We must just be bored with no other negative news to talk about, what with our fabulous economy, 18 years of peace time, record low unemployment, environmental wonders, and the curing of all diseases!

    Oh wait ...

Please - this is such a non story. If he took a hit? Great. He's human. Call me when he actually does something wrong. Meantime, give the guy a break.

The hotel staff can apparently get high just by smoking the sheets guests slept in....

First I must ascertain that you do not smoke pot so you won't sabotage the Olympian dreams of our future son. paranoid.gif

Just let the poor guy unwind and have a little fun! Geeze.

In the "apology" he released this morning he said that he acted inappropriately, blah blah blah. I think he should tell everyone where to stick it and to mind their own business.

after the olympics yes but the year or two before deff not.

you get drug tested after each sanctioned event. so its highly not possible that he was smoking out before or during the olympics

I agree. I know tons of hard core competitive athletes who smoke herb. Who cares, really?

I like where the Australian Dr says "They shouldn't test for it, its not performance enhancing."

    LOL

This post was mainly for the soapboxers who know everything and think that only LOSERS do "drugs" and that no one serious about sports can do this stuff.

It made me like Phelps even more, atually.

    Yes they can!

    Go Canada!

ROSS REBAGLIATI FIRST EVER OLYMPIC GOLD MEDALIST IN SNOWBOARDING

After winning the gold, he was found to have marijuana in his circulatory system and he was automatically disqualified. This decision was eventually overturned, largely on the basis that marijuana is not a performance-enhancing drug, and Rebagliati was given back the medal

LOL I remember that... but I think the real explanation is that because all snowboarders are pot heads it wouldn't have made sense to give the gold medal to someone else. icon_lol.gif

as for Phelps, I agree with those who think he should have had the balls to tell people to mind their own business. Why should he apologize to anyone???

I can assure you that marijuana *is* a performance-enhancing drug when it comes to snowboarding.
