Since the US has the position that the death penalty deters crime, so then why don't we have a death penalty for crimes other than murder?

So would you support the death penalty for non violent crimes such as petty theft or tax evasion? What are your thoughts?

Who says the US has the position that the death penalty deters crime?

Penalties for committing crimes usually do nothing to deter others from committing the same crime, especially crimes of passion. Despite prison sentences people still commit robberies, rapes, assaults, embezzling, car jacking, bank robbing, etc. So we should do away with prison?

I do support the death penalty for extreme cases; however, I wouldn't support the death penalty for petty theft or tax evasion.

Why don't you support the death penalty for petty theft of tax evasion? Why, because politicians commit those crimes.

Not saying I support it, but if that was a penalty for financial crime, we might have avoided the financial collapse. The death penalty might be too extreme for tax evasion, but there definitely should be hefty penalties for all financial crimes. People cannot get away with gaming the system.

I'm not a politician, so that doesn't hold water. Come back at me when you have an intelligent argument.

I've long felt that castration should be the punishment for rapists. It's well known that castration makes dogs, bulls, horses, etc. more tractable.

Apparently in England they used to do frontal lobotomies on violent criminals.

Maybe we should do like the Koran says and chop the hands off of thieves (one per conviction, after two start on the feet).

That would work if rape was a crime of sexual passion. It's not its a crime of power and domination acted out sexually to humiliate a woman. A castrated male will only be angrier with women because he will blame them for his castration. His next attack on a woman would be to rape her with an object like a broom handle. How many rape victims say the rapist did things like stick the gun barrel in their vagina's? Castration will not solve anything.

Being an uncomplicated guy, I'd begin with the simple premise that people ought not kill each other, ya know, without the other guy's permission, and work my way through all the tangential issues from there.

Testosterone makes us more aggressive so the castration would remove a major source of testosterone.

It depends on what your theory of punishment is--retributive justice, deterrence, rehabilitation, etc. Although I'm Catholic, I believe that death penalty is appropriate in certain situations. For example, I believe that recidivist rapists deserve the death penalty. I do not believe, however, that nonviolent (e.g., "white collar") criminals should be put to death. I would support hard labor (and I mean HARD LABOR) for nonviolent criminals who destroy other people's lives, e.g., those who commit financial crimes resulting in significant damage to many people.

I read how casually some of you give your opinions about giving death for this or that offense.

In Sharia law, all of us would be put to death just for being into other men.

Well rapists get raped in prison icon_razz.gif

I don't think our current death penalty law is good enough in actually deterring crime. I think we have a disproportionate amount of prison time for the crime committed.

Why are some drug offenders and fraud, theft going away longer than rapists, abusers (animals, child, women, etc)??

We need more minimum AND maximum sentences as well as better probation rules

Why do people sit in death row for up to 15 years? Appeal, appeal appeal. It's TOO MUCH justice and fairness. I am extreme, but we need to go back to other forms of corporal punishment like hanging, firing squad (some states have em) and gas chambers (some states have em). Cut the death row wait in half.

I would support the death penalty for NOTHING.

You are going to kill someone because they killed someone? How are YOU any better than they? Are you the source of Life that you can give yourself the right to take it from another?

Not even for people who sit at a red light for 30 seconds after it turns green because they're on their damn phone?

The death penalty is stupid. Judges/juries suck at determining absolute guilt and we've clearly murdered some innocent people. It should be a relic of the past and unconscionable now. We can certainly afford to incarcerate them for life if we stop jailing so many people for single, non-violent offenses.
