I thought the concord was shut down maily because of profitability.

metta saidI thought the concord was shut down mainly because of profitability.

It was for the most part. Enormous fuel cost to propel a plane that fast, and high maintenance costs. Only very well-heeled passengers could fly on it, and its capacity was not great.

Added to that were environmental concerns about upper atmosphere damage, that played a part in the cancellation of the competing SST program in the US before it ever went into service.

So a plane like this is not a new concept. Perhaps more efficient engines and a more aerodynamic design will make this one more feasible.

35-year old technology and the fact that there were only 13 of them in operation made it cost-prohibitive to keep making parts for it. Were this to happen, they would probably require a lot of guaranteed orders and risk-sharing.
