It was for the most part. Enormous fuel cost to propel a plane that fast, and high maintenance costs. Only very well-heeled passengers could fly on it, and its capacity was not great.
Added to that were environmental concerns about upper atmosphere damage, that played a part in the cancellation of the competing SST program in the US before it ever went into service.
So a plane like this is not a new concept. Perhaps more efficient engines and a more aerodynamic design will make this one more feasible.
