    Permanently did you say?

We should rename Mars: New Australia.

Now where's that list to place the names of people to send.

should be fun to watch kids with severely screwed up bone growth born on Mars

bones don't do very well in zero gravity - at all

Mars isn't 0 gravity - it's 38% of earth gravity. But your point is well taken.

Not much of a plan. Vague outline of a mission architecture. They still don't know how to deal with the radiation, toxic dust, or lack of water. Oddly enough, just this morning, I came across a couple of the people who used to lead this sort of work... out in the private sector now, trying to make a living selling high-tech greenhouses for urban agriculture.

There's also the little matter of the Outer Space Treaty. As it stands now, it is illegal to contaminate Mars with Earth organisms until it has been proven that there are no living microbes on Mars. That means no astronauts.

Would prisoners be sentenced to transportation?

hmmm, sounds like a trick question. Happens that I have a trick answer:

That depends. Were all the bureaucrats boarded early into The B Ark, had Adams survived longer to ship out also the banksters and the climate change deniers, the Golgafrinchamians might very well have re-evaluated racial bias of conviction rates and determined differently not just who might be transported but who would have been imprisoned in the first place by those being shipped out in the B Ark.

Sadly the good author died too soon for a rewrite.

But if ever there's a movie of the NASA event, already we've the soundtrack on file...

Permanently, you say? Fine, I'll pick. I'll start my list now.

Actually, it would be more efficient to use the Star Trek Transporter device, instead of going to all the trouble of building space ships. You know... that gadget the disintegrates your body and reassembles it at a distant location.

Well, the "reassembly" part is a bit dodgy so far, but surely it will be working by the time they arrive!

That might not be a bad idea to build the ideal society because on reintegration you could just leave out greed, homophobia, ya know, the bad parts.

And maybe give everyone a big circumcised dick. Technology is a wonderful thing.

NASA are looking for help from the public to colonize Mars. If they like your idea you could win $10,000!

I didn't even know who the K-A-R-D-A-S were until I googled them earlier today to find out. I concluded that it not useful information and that I had not missed anything by not knowing. Like Paris Hilton, they are apparently famous only for being famous. It's more important to know why Achilles' heal was his Achilles' heal, i.e., that it was not dipped into the River Styx.

Before permanently settling on Mars, I suggest cultivating an interest in reading and loading an electronic reader with thousands of books.
