When does this finally become old, tired and useless? icon_rolleyes.gif

    http://thinkprogress.org/lgbt/2015/10/14/3712002/houston-lgbt-sexual-predator-ads/

On November 3, the city of Houston will vote on the Houston Equal Rights Ordinance (HERO), which creates city-wide nondiscrimination protections, including for the LGBT community. Opponents of HERO, organized as the so-called “Campaign For Houston,” have been escalating their rhetoric demonizing the LGBT community, and a new ad demonstrates just how far they’re willing to go to suggest that transgender women are violent sexual predators

The extreme fearmongering in the ad is in line with the other kinds of statements the Campaign for Houston has been issuing of late. Whereas in September, the campaign’s ads claimed that transgender women are “filthy, disgusting, and unsafe” and implied that HERO puts women and children “at risk” and “in harm’s way,” the group’s statements have tried to raise the stakes even more since then.

With how conservative and closeted this city is I'd be surprised if it passes. I'm sure a majority of gay Houstonians would actually vote against it.

Houston is the urban heart and giant belt buckle of the Southern Bible Belt so I will not be shocked that all this ignorant, homophobic hatred wins out at the city's polls on 11/3. It is Texas after all, what do you expect from the Giant Tea Party Stateicon_question.gif

Many "Christians" think that the Command, "Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor" does not apply to them.

I wish I would have known that before moving here. Houston makes Dallas seem liberal.

I'm sorry but I agree with the ad campaign. If you have a penis.....use the MEN'S ROOM. Got a pussy? Use the WOMEN'S ROOM. It ain't rocket science.

It is the transgenders that are causing these problems. This is a valid reason why they are a major liability to the gay, lesbian, and bisexual communities. They need to be permanently severed from our community and coerced to form their own community and organizations and earn their rights rather than riding on the coat tails of gays, lesbians, and bisexuals. They are just bringing us down and that is wrong.

I'm confused. This contradicts your previous statement: "Houston is the urban heart and giant belt buckle of the Southern Bible Belt so I will not be shocked that all this ignorant, homophobic hatred wins out at the city's polls on 11/3. "It is the transgenders that are causing these problems."

I have to respectfully disagree with that... it is the homophobes that are causing these problems. Nothing makes them happier than to see us turn on each other.

I understand the arguments both for and against including gender issues with sexuality. There are common roots (sexism being the biggest one) but there are also big differences. They are a lot smaller, don't have the funding, and (I've observed) also have differences among themselves.

I don't get the rest room paranoia, especially on the part of gay men. In every gay bar I've been in, the bathrooms are a free-for-all. In other countries there is one bathroom and people don't seem to care. It amazes me that Americans are both the most prudish and the largest consumers of pr0n.

Obviously, it's not just the homophobes. The fact that it is making us turn on each other should make that obvious. Being gay has ZERO to do with gender confusion. Linking the two together only confuses the causes. Not to mention it keeps a lot of young gay people in the closet because they assume everyone will think they want to be a woman. I met someone who said this very thing to me a couple of months ago. I for one am sick of being joined at the hip to drag queens, transvestites and transexuals. My motto is "live and let live as long as you're not hurting anyone in the process." And this LGBTXYZ bullshit IS hurting others.....US.

I have heard this too, and I agree that is a legitimate problem, but if there wasn't sexism this would not be as much of an issue as it is. We have it beaten into us from a very young age that male > female and it is at the root of most of the stuff the haters say. If society saw gender neutrally, it would not be so taboo to be a sissy or what have you.

    ^This

I believe this is why we have had two Stonewall movies, 1995, 2015, 20 years apart (our liberation story) become flops because the tranny drag queen claim for top billing.

1995 Stonewall, turned off mainstream, gay and straight audiences due to over campy story lines of the drag and tyrannies in the movie, mainstream people were not prepared to watch this and the "liberation story" got lost in camp

2015 Stonewall, was boycotted by drag and tyrannies because it wasn't like the first movie, 20 years earlier, which had them as "star" of the movie characters. John Waters, and Divines Hairspray, finally went mainstream including movie remake and Broadway. Gay club icon, Rupaul, went mainstream when Logo channel appeared in 2005.

After these two movie "experiments", many years apart, I am afraid we, as a community, will never get a mainstream, gay liberation civil rights story told, other than the current documentary style. As long as the militant "T" tranny drag queens continue to use their influence over the rest of us "LGB", I would have to agree that, now is the time, the T should be separated from LGBQ, not out of any meanness, but to finally get our liberation civil rights story, history corrected. If the "T" is now mainstream, they used the GLB to get there, the "relationship" dynamic should now change,

Of course being gay is not the same -at all- as being transgendered, but I think we banded together all of the letters because we were all mistreated by the same aholes and we kind of needed each other.

I don't see us breaking apart though. That would work about as well as "reclaiming" an offensive word by using it ourselves hah.

The furor over discrimination in employment/housing laws is dumb. Even if they defeat it, we'll just come back in a few years and re-pass it. Big cities don't want to be known for allowing discrimination for the same reason big business doesn't... $$$.

The bathroom issue is just a mess.

I'm sure the GOP is trying to use this in the same way they did gay marriage in 2004 if it's coinciding with an election. Fuck them all.

I don't think lesbians want people to assume they're all itching to have their vaginas surgically altered to make penises either! The point isn't so much about homophobia or sexism (although that is a problem)......it's about not wanting people to assume things about you that aren't true.

Well let me clear that up for you, it is the transgenders that are throwing fuel on the smoldering fire which is getting all of Houston's right wing majority even more bitterly angry. They are just making matters worse.
