Sarasota County has the city of Sarasota itself, parts of which are quite nice, other parts not so much--crime rate 40% above national average; sex offender rate at 177:1 which is fairly high-- due west is Longboat Key, very nice and immediately south is Venice with its quaint downtown, but mostly that Sarasota area is hicksville. Here's their political make up...http://www.sarasotavotes.com/content.aspx?id=16

Not quite a blue county so I'm not surprised those freaks got into office.
To the north of Sarasota is Manatee Countyhttp://www.votemanatee.com/
Florida turns more blue (at least for a pocket) north of that around Tampa Bay with Pinellas and Hillsborough counties.
To the south of Sarasota is Charlotte & Lee countieshttp://www.charlottevotes.com/
When near the Sarasota gulf beaches as experienced by tourists you get a much different impression of the place than what's really there which is red engulfed by red. And the gulf there does coincidentally suffer deadly red tide.http://wfla.com/2015/10/22/red-tide-detected-off-manatee-sarasota-coasts/
