I think the straightest thing about me is my voice. It's deep, resonant, and, if I may allow myself this vanity, very butch, and commanding when I want. So is my husband's, as was my late partner's, both of them double-bass singers.
Mine is partly due to my Mother's advice. She always told me that people upon first meeting you will judge you by your voice. And if you SOUND impressive you will BE impressive. She drilled that into me repeatedly. I suspect because my voice was becoming faggy, if you'll forgive the word, and she took some rather original steps to correct it, which make another story.
Years later I learned both my parents knew I was gay, but never chose to tell me. Decades had to pass, making many mistakes, before I discovered it for myself. Anyhow...
Her words never left me, that I credit with much of my successful Army career. I got repeatedly and quickly promoted, from Private to Colonel, because I SOUNDED impressive, no matter what nonsense came out of my mouth.
