A Friend Told Me He Thinks The Holocaust Is a Lie

I decided to post this after reading the thread about Hitler.

This guy is a relatively new friend and I like him a lot. But he made a comment the other day that suggested the Holocaust didn't happen. I've heard of people with this opinion but never actually met any of them until now.

So now I'm not sure I want to be friends with this guy, even though I like everything else about him. What would you do?

Why don't you ask him why he thought that? icon_confused.gif

I also have a friend who believes that CA is not really in a severe drought but it's just a government propaganda.

I also heard that some people believed that 911 was orchestrated by the US. And US actually supports ISIS secretly, etc, etc. icon_eek.gif

I had a coworker who was a Holocaust denier. He was extremely right wing. I've always wondered if there's any correlation between their political views and being a Holocaust denier.

Because I prefer to stay out of conversations I know nothing about. The only thing I know about The Holocaust is what I was taught in school or seen on TV. And since I knew he would quote a bunch of "facts" if I had asked him, I would not be able to refute them.

People believe all kinds of crazy things that are not true. If you want to associate only with sane and well-informed people, you will be pretty lonely. Still... that particular delusion seems like it might come with a lot of other ugly stuff.

Many people think that way. Just yesterday I was reading about this Argentinian politician that said the world overreacted about the killings and that the truth is not what the media made us believe, hence the holocaust never existed. Her sayings as expected were very controversial.

From my point of view the holocaust existed as there are tons of proofs and would be ridiculous to deny it. But we have to admit the jews as an ethnicity haven't done much to be liked, so I suspect many of the people who reject the holocaust as an historical fact do it to have a green light to hate on jews in general and skip their constant victimization.

Lastly I wouldn't let that ruin my friendship unless the guy is an idiot at every level.

I watched Schindlers List after many years with a friend and when it ended he was like "did that actually happen"??

Maybe the friend thinks they committed mass suicide - some sort of contagious brain disease that only affected Jews?

The Turks assert to this day that the million Armenian Civilians they killed just perished while on pointless migrations because they weren't smart enough to take along food an water enough. Those Armenians must have had some sort of lemming gene in them.

I'm sure it will be only a few years until the Hutus in Rwanda convince everyone that the Tootsies just committed mass suicide one night.

Genocides will probably always be with us - starting with god telling the israelis to kill all those midianites (except the ones they could keep for sex slaves.)

He's not that Hollywood movie star you met in the baths or bars, is he - the one with the bodyguard? Sometimes becoming a celebrity brings on mental illness - look at Tom Cruise' weird belief in L.Ron Hubbard and Scientology.

Germans are famously meticulous, and the Nazis were no exception. They kept quite detailed records of the number of people they slaughtered, how little they were fed and what kind of backbreaking labor they were forced to do while waiting to be slaughtered, what kinds of bizarre and inhuman medical experiments were performed on them, etc. And there were more than enough survivors of the death camps to tell their stories (a college friend's parents met in one). The evidence of the Holocaust is overwhelming.

If Germany officially acknowledges this actually happened (unlike Japan who has yet to own up to their own war crimes) and in fact makes it a criminal offense to deny it, why would anyone dispute it?

I'm afraid I can't deal with irrational people. I would distance myself from the guy immediately.

I have/had relatives through my uncle's marriage that have tried to downplay the scale or horror of the Holocaust at family events. It was the only time I thought there was going to be a physical altercation at a family holiday party. The WW2 vets at the table just about lost their shit.

I think, short of anti-semitism, another reason people may say things like this is it is hard to believe human beings, especially in modern times, could be so awful. But it happened, and the world let it happen. It wasn't until we thought it would affect us personally that the US got involved.

If he doesn't believe it, I suggest he fly to Poland and visit Aushwitz and see for himself.

No "we" don't have to admit anything of the kind. It is generalizations like this that allowed the Nazis to keep the German population complicit in the elimination of unpopular or inconvenient groups of people.

    Spend some time here please.

Well, that's just it. He's the opposite of a moron. He's extremely intelligent, very witty and lot's of fun to be around. So I'm left with not knowing if maybe he knows something I don't or if he just got sucked into some kind of conspiracy theory (which happens to even very intelligent people.) I wish I knew more about The Holocaust but I've always just believed what I learned in school to be true so never researched any further than that.

But when I Googled it today I got lots of newspaper articles that mention "6 million Jews" decades before the event ever happened. Not just one or two articles but hundreds. Some as early as 1919. And yes, I do find that odd, but not sure it is evidence that it didn't happen. They also claim that the gas chambers were not gas chambers at all because they were not equipped with plumbing in which to pipe the gas in. They say the doors on these rooms had handles on the inside and opened to the inside of the room which would have made the rooms impossible to enter with dead bodies inside. They believe the bodies shown in the photos are from The Plague, not being gassed. They also post photos of recreational facilities for the Jews and how they provided new cloths for them and they argue they would not have provided these things just to kill them. These are just a few of the arguments I read today. Not saying I believe any of it but that's just what I found in a quick search today.

Personally, if a friend told me this and believed it, I'd automatically lose all the respect I once had for him.

There are a lot of people who have a lot invested in people doubting it. But there are many, many people who have relatives that disappeared. Where did they go? And what about the other five million people (Poles, Romani, Jehovah's witnesses, labor activists, homosexuals, and the mentally and physically disabled)?

One of my oldest and best friends is convinced the 9-1-1 attack was a staged demolition by some nefarious mysterious branch of the U.S. Government and that the images of the planes flying into the buildings are holograms made with top secret technology. In every other aspect of life my friend is sane, highly intelligent and very rational.

I'm left almost speechless at times how dumb people can be. In your friends case my warning bells would be going off because I suspect an underlying anti-Semitism at play, and that would lead me question how nice he really is.

I can introduce him to my co-worker who watched it out the window. Our office was 11 blocks away. I am extremely grateful I wasn't there that day; I don't know how she sleeps.

This would appear to be the most exhaustive site debunking the denyers' claims. If this guy is as intelligent as all that, if he brings this up again I would ask him WHY he thinks this, when pretty much every reputable institution in existence at the time states it occurred as a fact. Does he seem bothered by it? Maybe this is something you guys can unpack together.

The internet is full of these people. And so many YouTube videos with various conspiracies behind 9/11. It's both funny and sad. It's like you say, there are a lot of seemingly intelligent people out there that believe in this crap. I just don't get it.

I try not to suspect or "fear" the agenda of our congress members.. and then there are people like Ted Cruz.. which chill me to the bone with suspicion.

With regards to 911 and the Holocoust however, those events seem the most organized acts of man in human history.

That they were allowed to happen in plain sight of everyone on the planet.. and then after their fact, it seems almost nothing done.. are complimentary acts that are just hard to believe.
