On Sunday Nov. 1 (the Feast of All Saints), The Right Rev. Michael Bruce Curry will succeed the Most Rev. Dr. Katharine Jefferts-Schori as Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church. The "titular staff" will change hands during a service at the Cathedral Church of St. Peter & St. Paul in the City & Diocese of Washington (AKA the "National Cathedral" a term which smacks of Establishment and irks at my separate-church-and-state leanings).

I had the privilege to meet Bishop Curry and hear him preach last fall when he--already in the running for the Presiding Bishopric--chose to cast his lot with those working for the full inclusion of LGBT people in the church by celebrating at the 40th anniversary of Integrity, the church's LGBT organization. This left no doubt where he stood on issues that have troubled the church since the 1980s. That journey more or less ended at this summer's triennial General Convention, when not only did the church elect Curry to succeed Jefferts-Schori, but agreed that marriage is marriage, and open to all committed couples regardless of gender.

Jefferts-Schori, who holds a doctorate in oceanography and is also a licensed gen-av pilot, completes her nine-year term Sunday. She was the first female to hold the top post in any church in the Anglican Communion, including ours. Curry will become the first black Presiding Bishop in the Episcopal Church, but joins others in the Communion, including the Most Rev. Desmond Tutu, retired Archbishop of Cape Town and leader of the South African province of our church.

The service will be webcast and I hope to watch it.

As an Episcopalian and very supportive.. including my weekly fitness program on Episcopal webradio (www.the-cbe.org), I'm thrilled to hear it. I can say, I've always been encouraged to talk about anything and be very candid about doing so (including an awesome interview with the Frontrunners in KC in our first season).

Very pleased to hear this news!

And he also -- wow, big surprise -- doesn't appear to much like free speech. There's been much talk about the diocesan newspaper editor/secretary who he fired for practicing journalism ... he said "I don't need a journalist, I need a PR person."

Ah, yes, the open minded left ... but only as long as you agree with them. Never met a more close-minded group of people as these particular types of leftists.

And the membership of the Episcopal Church continues to decline. According to their latest figures (which no one believes), they're down to 1.6 million people in a country of 330 million people.

This is what happens when you stop standing for something having to do with god and become a political organization. People already have the Democratic Party what do they need the Episcopal Church for? Sherry at coffee hour?

How many more tens of millions of dollars in loans will he take out to continue his predecessor's practice of suing people who want to leave the Episcopal Church? They're almost worse than Scientology.

I'm confused. How come when I looked at the Profile of this Hidden Member, his posting history is all the podcast stuff.

I'm totally confuzzled. Is the system broken?
