hmm probably when 2 friends and I took a canoe down the swollen Ramapo River (northern NJ) after a hurricane and almost lost Bret in a whirlpool created by downed trees

we lost the canoe, but salvaged Bret after he was sucked underwater for 2 minutes or so

you do some pretty stupid things when you're 16

My bud had a house on the Ramapo. And as a little kid I used to skate on Pompton Lake.

Got "for real" haunted in San Diego. I found it interesting rather than scary; but most I think would have been scared.

yep, this incident was up near the Oakland/Mahwah border - it was an extremely cool area to grow up in - sorta suburba-rural and 50 minutes from Manhattan

Scary things tend to happen so fast that you don't have time to be scared.
    - car rollover
    - motorcycle wipeout
    - boat almost being sucked into a giant whirlpool
    - coming face to face with a grizzly
    - coming face to face with a bull moose
    - bullet singing past my ear
    - runaway tractor/baler bouncing down the hill

Long drawn-out shit that has time to fester. Now that's scary
    - mortgage
    - taxes
    - oral exams
    - age

    I know mine is silly...
But I was very scared once I sort of fall sleep (was feeling sick) and not only everyone left me alone in the house and didn't leave any note or anything, but I went on looking for anyone and the hallway door lock "click" behind me... Really was just a second, but I feel that sort of "What the hell" with some "Someone's gotta be here..."

People scare me D: More if I don't know them lol

I was fifteen, and as dealing with emotional issues because i'd come out of the closet 6 months earlier and was having a tough time dealing with it. Went to a friend's. We ended up chilling with her ex boyfriend at his bachelor pad, and this was a gay guy there. His 48 year old bf was the landlord.

The landlord walks in, he's this huge wardrobe of a man, who starts telling me how beautiful I am and stuff. Before this, his boyfriend was telling how he wished the guy would stop hitting him if he disagreed with him, and he had a fading bruise below the eye. So then he starts drinking, I'm sitting on a chair and as he gets the alcohol he kisses my hand and calls m "princess" and starts telling his boyfriend how ugly he is compared to me. So then he gets sad and tells us how he was in jail for 3 years for "loving a man" who turned out to a 15 year old boy (his current boyfriend was 20). SO then he asked mt to lift my shirt up and I did a little bit, but then I just flatly refused. SO he got out of his chair and started yelling at me about how this is his house and he threatened my friend and said he's slap her and that he is not afraid to hit a girl if she's being a bitch. SO I retreated back to my seat, started reaching for a knife, and then he just said "The wine's done. I'll be at the bar" and then he turned around, left and slammed the door as he did so.

    Scariest thing ever.

To this day I have a disdain towards older men, especially if they are gay. Even though I know they're being friendly, decent human beings and are not trying to rape me, I have a visceral reaction of just pulling away and not wanting them near me. And I also get quite feisty and aggressive with old guys who I perceive are getting too close to me. I think I'm just protecting myself, but later on I realise that they were only trying got be nice to me

The house was in Oakland and my bud's buried in Mahwah so, um, curious of you to mention the two in one. It's beautiful up there. We spent summers there when we weren't partying in the city or crashing for months at a time with my cousins in Rainbow and Mountain Lakes--you'd think we'd have just gone home but, nope, we moved in with the dog, too fun. His sister was in Franklin and I've a childhood friend who for many years lived in Wyckoff. I know that area all too well.

I can definitely relate. Though I'm a good swimmer, I almost lost my life twice while kayaking and canoeing and once in a heavy ocean surf. You don't really understand the force of water until it overcomes you! OTOH, I learned from both encounters and once saved my nephew's life in a similar rip current on L. Michigan. Scary even to think about!

My younger days... Winter camping with some buddies... One guy went out to walk on the "frozen" lake and fell through the ice. The other buddy and i were able to get him out, but he went hypothermic almost immediately and passed out. We carried him back to the cabin we were in, got a fire lit and him out of the wet clothes. He regained consiousness and we were able to get him blanketed next to the fireplace and sipping on hot tea.

We never had to do the whole "share the sleeping bag to share body heat thing"... Though I was ready to if necessary.

Carrying a buddy through the woods worrying that he was dead... Def the scariest moment of my life.

Granted this might not be very Helloween-y, but... when I was 8 (I think), I was playing near the housing estate my mom and I lived in. We had playgrounds nearby where kids would usually hang out - adult supervision wasn't really a thing in our neighbourhood so I was all by mythelf.

I saw two tall older guys just... walking around the building talking to one another. When they noticed me, they smiled and started running full speed towards me - that scared the living daylights out of me. I bolted towards a friend's house (it was closer). I never even looked back, so I have no idea if they were chasing me and if they were - for how long.

To be fair those guys were probably trying to prank me - the place I was living in at the time had a fare share of douchebags who liked scaring kids. Still, that was by far the most terrified I've ever been in my life... I don't remember a lot from my childhood, but I still remember their faces...

This was only really scary when it happened, I was lying on my pillow, it was folded in half basically and when I got up, the pillow got straight up as I got up and it felt like something was about to grab me icon_neutral.gif

Almost dying in a snowstorm. Walking a mile or so in knee-deep, blinding snow to find the house. Wind so strong and cold it blew the moisture out of me. I was exhilarated that I could die.

Back in the 80s, almost had sex with a guy who had AIDS but didn't know it. He died a few years later.

Well I wouldn't exactly call it scary, but it was before I came out to friends and family. I was with a guy who eventually became my bf and he was showing me the ropes I guess. And my Aunt that I was very close to passed away a few days earlier, while in the middle of making out my TV went on. And there is no way in hell that TV could have just accidentally went on. I'm sure if you want to get technical and look at every possible situation you could explain it with science I guess. Well anyway, I no longer had a remote for the TV, and the power button was broken, you had to stick your finger in the slot where the power button was to turn it on. I paused for a bit and just assumed if spirits are real, now she knows and went back to what we were doing.

Being shot by a drugged up burglar in my own house when I was 17. I was shot through my arm and through my chest. The shooter fled through a French door but I didn't know if he was gone or if he was going to realize I was not dead, and return closer for a point blank final shot to my head. I laid there in serious pain, bleeding profusely. A friend who was there and not hit was calling 911. I laid there bleeding out, and my friend used a sofa pillow to try to slow down the bleeding. Scared? I was scared shitless - waiting for death. With the pain I would have welcomed death. I was surprised when I began hearing sirens coming up the hill. More surprised the next day to wake up in the hospital - alive.
