Holland ends lifetime ban on gay and bisexual men giving blood

Men who have sex with men in the Netherlands will now be allowed to give blood if they have not been sexually active with another man in the past year

Just make sure you don't die there.
I'm sure the Hollanders mean well, but there's just too much not known about HIV to justify this politically correct, medically unsound policy change.

    Are you joking?!???
HIV is one of the most studied viruses out there. Blood can be adequately screened for HIV so there is no reason to have a one year moratorium on donating. With pretty much constant shortages of blood products anything that can expand the pool of donors is a good idea.

No, I'm dead serious. Yes, HIV's been studied extensively - though never enough for some - but the one thing conclusively known about it is its tremendous ability to mutate, and not all tests, assuming they're done, can keep up w/ that. I stand by my post - and caution.

You are seriously ignorant. Yes, because it is a reverse transcriptase RNA virus it has a low fidelity reproduction mechanism which leads to more rapid mutation. But it's STILL the same virus! HIV doesn't become something else. And a PCR test will still detect it. These rules banning gays donating are a holdover from a time when there was no good test for HIV. Now there is.

Yes, you're right on the description of HIV, but sorry, I'll side w/ caution. Much of this outward anger over "not being able to donate" is just another form of immaturity disguised as charity, a character flaw that reasonably impugns the honesty of such people in disclosing what their HIV status really is. And, too many of those who do know it but insist on making it a public issue by riding the blood bandwagon do so only for selfish reasons, to bring themselves to public attention.

"MGINSD", I often wonder if you are just trolling considering how you seem to go out of your way to appear as small-minded as one can be.
