One guy which I thought seemed nice at first but then some things didn't seem to quite fit, he went by the name christophe111, the profile is still active because I just saw it but then found another with a different name and photos but the same person, claiming to be in Calcutta, I sent him a message and got blocked because I asked who he really was, The inconsistencies were in where he lived and where he was from etc on both profiles, several countries being used, communicating in an un french way when he claimed he was french, I know how they speak as a foreigner speaking english. I did wonder how long it would take but then he asked for money because he needed money for a plane ticket as his briefcase had been stolen etc,
Who else has had these problems and what happened because it is criminal and just trying to extort money from people or information to then use for other means.
Would be interested in your stories, Thanks

I keep my photos locked so they can't be used by other people, trust is earned and I only have pics of me with clothes on anyway, I don't want too much unwanted attention.

Oh, yes, this was probably the same guy (similar moniker) who RJ messaged me just after I joined. It's probably a violation of something to mention specifics from private RJ-mail, so I won't; but after several exchanges I think he caught on that I was getting wary from certain things he was mentioning (I tend to play along for a while, just to see what will happen), so that ended that. There are lots of cool and interesting guys here on RJ whom I'd enjoy having a friendly "message relationship" with; it's a mega-bummer that there are also other, less benign, entities here who make it necessary to be suspicious about what's up. But such is life.

There are many different reasons a person can have a fake profile:

    • They're here to befriend members and eventually ask them for money or some other scam.

    • They're spying on someone and want to remain undercover

    • They have little support on the forums so they create sock accounts to make it look like someone else backs up their point of view (think Southbeach.)

    • Some have no friends and get no attention at home, so they troll the forums to get the attention they crave. And for people like this, even negative attention is better than no attention at all.

    • There are some people who are just downright mean and delight in fucking with people.

    • And this is probably the saddest reason of all: Many people are very unattractive or have some type of deformity or handicap that would make them very unpopular if they were to show their real photos. So they post a fake pic and pretend that they're popular for a while. icon_neutral.gif

Interesting thoughts on all this, as regards people having fake profiles because of disability, deformity or through being unattractive shouldn't make any difference to who you are as a person and I would respect someone even more for being honest about who they are, it would not be a deal breaker for me, one guy I dated had a cleft pallet and was a very lovely guy and didn't make any difference to me about being slightly deformed, its who you are that counts, if someone wouldn't date someone for these reasons then they are not worth dating anyway because they are shallow and selfish.

Well yes, but 99% of gay men do not feel that way and these people are smart enough to sense that. Gay men can be very superficial. But also, physical attraction is normally the first hook of attraction, especially online, and that's just a fact that's probably not going to change.

MuchMoreThanMuscle saidI really wish Jeff would do something about this. All he seems to care about are people using fake pictures which is so trivial.

What do we really get out of fake profiles? Free RJ membership.

My guess is that the #1 draw to this website are people seeking a quick dose of eye candy logging on or viewing JUST to see Man of the Day candidates with the expectation that at least SOME are real, ergo, remotely attainable. For these viewers, profile pictures are probably the excitement equivalent of porn "amateurs." Without hot fake photos to fap to site traffic would be WAY down, and traffic is what generates revenue and keeps membership free.
