Yeah, we get a lot of gay teens here in South Florida who are disowned by their Christian fundamentalist and Right Wing families. This area attracts them because of the warm weather, where they can live on the streets if need be, far better than in a snow-belt State, and we have a fairly large and out gay population.
Some of these booted kids aren't even 18, cases of 16 & 17, didn't even get to finish high school when they were thrown out.
You'd think the families would be charged with a crime, but they rarely are. Their defense is to say the kid ran away, even if it was never reported. And the social workers and police here have a dilemma, because a minor must be returned to their family, but the child doesn't want to return to that abusive environment again, and some States won't easily accept the kids into their protective services without lengthy procedures.
Plus, sad to say, these kids will turn to street hustling to make money, from being rent boys to classic prostitution, turning quick tricks at clubs, and also go-go dancers if they have a body and the talent, kept boys by older men (interestingly I've never encountered older lesbians who have "kept" girls), and other unsavory, unhealthy and unsafe ways to survive.
I also saw some of it when I lived in Seattle. Not the same friendly weather as Florida, but another large gay population, and not far from some very extremist Right Wing and Mormon concentrations in Oregon. So tragic to see that, and it defies human understanding and compassion.
