I work the whole week from 12-8pm, except weekends. The gym I've started to go to is a very small gym (one bench and one rack) and it is packed before 12. The good news is, the gym is 24 hours so I can go anytime. That makes my option past 8pm. I've been there only once during these times and I'm not trying to sound like a scaredy cat, but there's these weird guys who hang outside of the gym staring at me. I am really scared to go at these times. It is locked and only accessible with a keycard, but I'm afraid to leave after finishing up.

Should I just suck it up and go? Or just try to do it during the day, even if it takes a long time for me to even get my turns in? I really want to improve my body, but I'm just really afraid of those people.

Sorry guys if this is the wrong part of the forums to post this question in. I thought about the fitness section, but that wouldn't be right either.

Have you reported to the gym management that there are unsavoury types loitering outside the gym at night?

I would probably suggest going to a different gym if you feel unsafe.

Do not - find a gym that is 24 hours with a staff. Forget what's outside, what may be inside? Key card accessible gyms always weirded me out. No, no, find another gym or suck it up and go during busy hours.

I told them today and they said that's what the emergency buttons are for. They tried to reassure me that there is no way I'm in any danger as long as I remain inside the gym and contact police or push the button if I feel threatened.

I just wish there was another gym nearby, but the bigger one is 20+ miles from me.

But you can't remain inside the gym indefinitely. If these characters are outside wouldn't you still have to pass them when you leave, alone at night?

I'd find a gym in a better neighborhood. Or if too far away, start buying your own home equipment.

Wait... there are ruffians staking out the gym in Enumclaw?

Are you sure it's not somebody's goat that got loose?

One bench and one rack... couldn't you set that up at home? That's what I did when the gym got too inconvenient.

Suck it up and go During the Day.

    1. You'll have people to spot you.
    2. You'll make friends.
    3. You'll be more motivated to improve yourself than lifting alone
    4. You won't have these night terrors
    5. You won't have to go find a gym further away.
    6. You wont have to post about this problem again---cos there won't BE a problem

    Simple.

I can do this, but I usually prefer lifting alone so I can just do my thing without having to wait or feel like I'm making a fool out of myself. Thanks though, I think I'll just have to go due to safety reasons.

    @mindgarden

This is over in Buckley, which isn't much I of a difference since both are quite peaceful, but there's been recent criminal activities and arrests lately. Some woman was murdered after going to the bar here and getting with some guy who later dumped her body over in Orting.

    K. I haven't been up there for... A while. Last time I was in Puyallup, I did a drive-by of my Grandpa's old house. Nice quiet place out in the forest, beyond a cow pasture. Big trees. A little pond with trout across the road. Except now it's like, a nasty alley behind a mall. icon_eek.gif

But even that was 20 years ago. It's probably an "Arby's" or some such shit now. icon_sad.gif

I don't know if you've tried early in the morning. Given your schedule, that might be a good option since you don't start work until noon. I play tennis around 830 or 9am three days per week and try to hit the gym for weights, cardio, and longer periods of stretching 1-2 days/week.

I find that if I get my workout done early, I am more likely to sleep better at night and I don't have the problem of being too tired after working to work out. As an older jock, I need to be strategic about how I use my energy.

No Arby's. I've lived here for over 5 years and it's been the same. The community doesn't want it to change much at all.

I would love it if I could just walk in during the morning, get my workout in and just leave for work, but hell no. Everyone and their mother is there. And like I said, only one of each equipment. I could use the machines though...since everyone here just prefers the free weights.

Can you get a friend or two to go with you?
