I didn't even realize that liking men sexually meant I was gay back then. I only realized it in high school (or late Grade 6 I think) when it dawned to me that boys were supposed to like girls. Thought it was only a phase though. Then fell for a guy friend and after struggling with it... finally realized the implications that I really might be gay. Thus began the trainwreck that ended only a few years back. I'm still sorting through the wreckage. icon_biggrin.gif

I didn't actually know I was gay until a conversation with a gay guy who assured me that most gays are actually masculine, despite the swishy stereotype. And that gays are football players, and fire fighters, and military, and... Military? I just went "uh-oh!" and it was all over.

But in retrospect, and realizing now that my whole family knew I was gay as a kid, I suppose my being glued to the TV mesmerized by old Errol Flynn and Tyrone Power movies was one give-away. Gawd they were beautiful! That, combined with my total non-interest in any female actresses, with one exception: Sonja Henie, the famous Olympic ice skater and later Hollywood star. An exception that proves the gay rule.

In addition, I guess my PARENTS concluded I was gay, even if I didn't, when: I'd take my younger sister's toy makeup kits and style her hair and do her makeup for her. Or swipe her dolls and give them new hairdos, too. Teaching myself to use the sewing machine and making my own simple clothes beginning at 12. Also ironing my own things at the same age, and being a very fussy & fastidious dresser (was required to wear a coat & tie all through private elementary school, but the jeweled tie tacks were prolly a bit much).

Not to mention the paisley dressing gown I'd wear around the house, instead of a sloppy flannel plaid bathrobe like most boys at that time. Or that I'd forever be trying to redecorate the house, rearranging furniture here, making a nice setting on the dining room table there, moving lamps around for better lighting effects, and dragging down paintings from the attic to fill gaps on the walls. Or being designated at 13 by my mother to henceforth take care of all the Christmas decorations in the house, because "you do it much better than us."

Yet I was also surprisingly rugged, spending most of my summers outdoors, swimming, camping & fishing, taking all-day bicycle trips by 11 that still astonish me. A dichotomy that I'm convinced is what PREVENTED me from knowing I was gay until very late, given the gay stereotypes of the era that weren't compatible with my masculine side.

Like redbull I had so many ones that should have told me I was gay, but unlike him I wasn't listening. Stupid me. icon_redface.gif

I remember one time my parents had some friends from out of state staying with us. I was about 5 or 6 and they had a daughter my age also. She came in my room and asked if I wanted to see her "thingy"...I said "what"?

She pulled down her pants and I ran and screamed for dear life....I guess I should have known then, hahaha.

But seriously folks, I realized when I was 16. I used to masturbate to the cosmopolitan magazines my brother's girlfriend had when I was in the 8th grade, but it didn't click until I was 16. I remember vividly because I had the light bulb go off in my brother's car right as it passed under a tollbooth near D.C. on the way home from school. Spiraled into depression and self-loathing until I was 20. But, things are much better now.

Yeah, I'd still scream & run today -- LOL!

I remember as a boy frequently overhearing my mother telling others that I was very "artistic" and "sensitive" without realizing at the time her real meaning. All I could think to myself was "Artistic?? I'm not an artist! I can't draw at all! Why is she saying that?"

    DUH!!! LMAO!

a wild, drunken 3-way with my open minded best friend and his wife convinced me i had been chasing the wrong side of the pasture all those years.

after we tag-teamed her and she passed out (from all the alcohol), i felt this hand on my upper thigh...it moved up...and up....

6 hours later i awoke, naked and hard, wrapped up in the arms and legs of my best friend.

my first thought, upon awakening was "ohh...this explains a LOT of things!"

i had always suspected i was working wayyyy to hard at dating and (trying to) enjoy sex with girls...now i knew why.

i always was, and the clues go back as far as i can remember, though before puberty, all the 'show me yours, i'll show you mine- truth or dare' stuff i did and enjoyed with my friends wasn't really understood as sexual- i assumed it was normal. the same goes for the innocent hard-ons i'd get from comicbook heros or other random things.
then, in middle school, two things stand out in my mind: i would get hard a lot in class cause i thought it was hot that all the jocks were getting hairy legs, and more obviously (baseball bat to the head really), i had to take group public showers every other day for gym with all of them lol- to my credit i never got hard in there (i suspect if i had, i'd be dead now) but i had huge crushes on the big jocks that were, for their part, usually mean to me.. so the combination of fear, awe, lust, awkwardness, intimidation, curiosity... was such a heady mix it's colored my sexuality ever since. i still think rough sex in the shower is the hottest thing ever ;)

Many of my gay friends say similar things, but I remain skeptical. Though I believe we're gay or straight at birth, and may show gay signs early, as I apparently did myself, how does a 6-year old know enough about being gay to make that determination regarding himself?

At 6 I hadn't the slightest idea what gay was, didn't even know the term. I had a vague idea that some men & boys were "sissies" in the feminine sense, but the sexual component was far beyond my understanding at that age. In fact, as far as I can recall, I had no knowledge or interest in sex whatsoever.

May I ask what you remember about your thought processes at that time? What was your concept of being gay, and how did you think you fit into that? Thanks, don't mean to challenge you at all, just truly curious and interested in learning.

I didn't truly begin to figure it out until we got the internet around freshman year of high school and this whole world of porn opened up.

Only, it was gay porn to which I was most attracted. I started visiting those sites way more than the straight ones. I'd even search out those Penthouse Forum type stories of the gay variety.

I denied it for a very long time just telling myself it was a phase and actually getting mad at myself for going to them. But, I couldn't stop.

But, as I look back on my childhood, there are definitely signs that I recognize. I'm sure my parents noticed them too.

When I was 5yo I had a crush on David Bowie and Aquaman.
( I was " loving the alien" even back then. LOL ! )
I was also obsessed with a Dusty Springfield album that my Dad had.
I had to hear it daily at lunchtime. He gave it to me several
years later. I still have it in my collection.

My story is very similar. I've been attracted to men since I was like 15, and I realized it when I started masturbating to gay porn, though I managed to deny it for many years. I actually accepted it at 23, which is kind of sad.

Anyway, now that I came out "to myself" and the guilt is gone I'm really enjoying it.

LMAO!!!! I had a similar experience. Was playing the "show me yours, I'll show you mine" game and so I'm looking at it and she asks, "Do you want to touch it?" and my immediate response was "NO!"
