It is a head turner that he is a Democrat given his background:

NYT: A more promising red state Democrat could hardly have been found than Mr. Edwards, a Catholic social conservative from a family of rural law enforcement officers who graduated from West Point and served eight years of active duty in the Army.

I really thought Vitter couldn't lose this in Louisiana. That when it came to actually voting for a Democrat against a Republican, Louisiana voters couldn't bring themselves to betray their Party guy, no matter how sleazy he is.

Not sure how effective Edwards can be with a Republican legislature in Baton Rouge. Similar scenario to Obama with a Republican Congress, determined to make him fail even if it hurts the country. "Party first, people second". I wish our rnch in New Orleans the best, since I understand this Edwards is as socially conservative as many right-wing Republicans, and you know what that means for us. We shall see...

This is good news for beleaguered Louisiana. Evidently the state's voters are fed up with corrupt, ineffective, hypocritical politicians. Hopefully when the state legislatures are up for election, the people of Louisiana will choose like minded candidates who will work with this new governor and solve many of Louisiana's most pressing problems. The Baton Rouge statehouse needs a good housecleaning and this new governor is the right step in that overdue direction.

Vitter is trash personified, his ethics and morals are deplorable and that was enough to keep him from winning. This was a truly a well deserved defeat and thankfully it has ended his career in politics. Good riddance, creep.

Hopefully this is a positive sign that deeply conservative Louisiana is starting to wake up and realize the hypocrisy of the religious, right wing movement that most of this state's voters have blindly embraced over the past couple decades. Hopefully the majority of Louisiana natives 18 and over will become more moderate and more centrist and tell all the narrow minded bible thumping screwballs to go fuck themselves. Vitter is trailer trash personified.
