Mr Philips has been seen drug taking. Not only should he be giving a lot of cash back, as he is no doubt, in breach of what hes being paid for, too be seen as a good roll model for other people's children.

Give back your Gold too, you Druggie.

    Give back your gold!

Mr. "Phelps" -- and -- damn dude the kid just won 8 gold medals, I'd say his work is done. Let the dude smoke a lil pot! icon_wink.gif He needs to chill out after all that work somehow! I say he gets another gold for smoking pot, and being a good role model, and for doing it all with 8 golds!

How has he violated any of the things for which he was paid?

Smoking pot is probably the least-serious offense imaginable. If anything, this should increase his role model status: even if you smoke pot once in a while, it doesn't make you a fuck-up (like all young people are led to believe). So study hard, work hard, and pass the bong, just like Michael PHELPS!

    Again I say.....

All I really have to say in response to the actual ethical question of Phelps' marijuana use (which is at the heart of this matter) is that it's not for nothing that the Citizen's Briefing Book given to Obama had this as its top idea for change:

    Citizen's Action BookEnding Marijuana Prohibition
I suggest we step back and take a non-biased science based approach to decide what should be done about the utter failure that we call the war on (some) drugs.
The fact is that marijuana is much less harmful to our bodies than other legal drugs such as tobacco and alcohol. And for the government to recognize marijuana as having medicinal properties AND as a schedule I drug (has NO medicinal properties) is an obvious flaw in the system. We must stop imprisoning responsible adult citizens choosing to use a drug that has been mis-labeled for over 70 years.

The next most popular topic had less than 2/3 the number of votes that this one did. So I think there's a discrepancy between what people seem to think and how they are reacting. Personally, I ascribe to a viewpoint similar to the idea presented above. The responsible use of marijuana is in no way unethical or immoral. As such, I don't think that Phelps is "acting out", nor has he "betrayed his fans" or any silly idea like that. I think he's just an adult doing what tons of adults already do.

Why is everyone making such a big deal over this?

I know at least 75% of teens that I know of smoke pot or have tried it (Smart kids who are attending UF, Yale, Columbia) to you average teen. Doctors are actually starting to find medicinal benefits from the plant even-though inhaling smoke is (bad) i.e. cancerous.

I'm afraid that gjoseph is mistaken about pot being cancer-causing. It's not, and is, in fact, prescribed by oncologists in the treatment of cancer. Pot is NOT tobacco.

I'm not a pot user, but I think it's crazy that it's labeled a criminal activity.

Yes, let's hang Michael Phelps out to dry, whilst we meanwhile think that Amy Winehouse, George Michael, Britney Spears, Whitney Houston and even new president Barack Obama are "cool" for using drugs.

    get real

ChuckyStud -- what I really meant to say was smoking pot with cancer causing paper such as blunt wraps etc. is cancerous. And to me I think I made so factual statements.....why is alcohol "legal" if there are those who drink & drive, drink themselves to their death, etc. I think in this country people need to lay off on Michael Phelps. Yes, what he did was "illegal" but it's totally harmless....ask a group of 18-24 year olds and I'm sure they know of someone or have smoked pot =)

Give back your high school diploma since you cannot spell. The correct word is "role".

Oh Jesus, wait, it's Pattison. Nevermind!

I can't find anything on joint wraps or papers causing cancer cancer. I did, however, find a news article highlighting a study concerning marijuana and lung cancer.

I might want to point out a "blunt paper" is the outer tobacco leaf from a cigar. Tobacco, of course, is shown to be carcinogenic.

Who makes a big deal over pot anymore? Whenever I see people getting outraged about such trivial things as someone smoking pot all I can think is: "Don't you have things to do?" Are people's lives so dull that they can actually go to the effort of creating a backlash over someone smoking pot? Let him do what he wants. He didn't exhale into your child's face or something.

I find it hard to believe something as trivial and ordinary as this even makes the news. College-age guy has a bong at a party. Wow.

I support him more after this. It just shows everyone he is human. It made the news because who it was that is the only reason. But he apologized and just proved he is human.

Phelps is a person like you and me who is known by many because he has done great things in swimming. Why put him to a higher standard than we put anyone else?

I don't smoke pot but I don't think any less of my friends who do on occasion. I think no less of Phelps because of the picture. Let's move on.
