    NYT: Both prunes and prune juice have a laxative effect that is not entirely understood. A 100-gram serving of prunes — about 10 prunes — contains 6 grams of fiber, but “this alone would not be enough fiber to explain the laxative effect,” said Lisa Cimperman, a dietitian and spokeswoman for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

    What may be doing the trick is the presence of a sugar alcohol called sorbitol.

    Had a friend who did not know what prune juice can do. He called me one day and wanted to go down to the mall for a while. We went. Shortly after we got there he told me that he had drunk some prune juice just before we left. Asked him how mush. A quart!

    For some odd reason we made a very quick trip back home, where he stayed busy for a while.
