NYT: For young men maimed in combat, surgeons at Johns Hopkins hope to ease a rarely discussed injury with an operation that has never been performed in the United States.

This is an issue for many vets who returned from Afghanistan and Iraq.I hope the surgery is successful.

I hope is open for all veterans, not just from Iraq, afghanistan, etc.

I recalled a vietnam war veteran counselor at my school in a wheel chair- that had been injured and suffered similar issue. So hopefully the Veterans Affairs Department will considered "all veterans".

NYT: From 2001 to 2013, 1,367 men in military service suffered wounds to the genitals in Iraq or Afghanistan, according to the Department of Defense Trauma Registry. Nearly all were under 35 and were hurt by homemade bombs, commonly called improvised explosive devices, or I.E.D.s. Some lost all or part of their penises or testicles — what doctors call genitourinary injuries.

Doctors who treat young men wounded in combat say that no matter how bad their other injuries are, the first thing the men ask about when they wake up from surgery is whether their genitals are intact.

“Our young male patients would rather lose both legs and an arm than have a urogenital injury,” said Scott E. Skiles, the polytrauma social work supervisor at the Veterans Affairs Palo Alto Health Care System.

Rude. Besides, for most gender confirmation surgeries, the existing genital nerves are kept intact and used to reconstruct new genatalia so that sex is pleasurable.

It's amazing what medicine can do. I hope the surgery is successful.

Pathetic post. I'd suggest taking yours instead, but I doubt anybody would want it.
