    today
"A Boston-area Roman Catholic girls' high school (Fontbonne Academy in Milton) violated a gay man's (Matt Barrett) rights when it revoked an offer for him to work as director of food services after he revealed on a form that he was married to another man, a state court (Massachusetts Superior Court Justice Douglas Wilkins) has ruled."

A Catholic entity violated a gay entity. Shocking.

What's NOT a yawn is a State Superior Court Justice making such a ruling.

And BTW, a gay man is not an "entity".

Most compelling was the Court's finding that: "...Fontbonne [Academy] also employs people who are not Catholic as well as those who are married outside the church." Which negates the Academy's argument that all it's staff, including those in non-teaching positions like the plaintiff, must comply with Roman Catholic Church teachings & doctrine as a condition of employment. Fontbonne let's others violate this requirement, it was just the gay guy who got singled out.

What idiots. Several interviews and they couldn't tell he was gay?! Just looking at his picture it's quite obvious his loafers don't touch the ground. Why in the Hell did they offer him a job in the first place? Stupid.

Also, why do people do this? Unless you've been living under a rock your entire life everyone knows the Catholic Church has a problem with homosexuality so why would you want a job with an employer who has a problem with you for who you are at your very core?

Yep. At least a decade or so ago there was a guy who did a gay porn video. He did it when he was employed at a Catholic Jesuit university (USF). The school found out and fired him. I don't know if he had any legal recourse back then but that's what I thought; that guy's an idiot.

When any organization is run from the top by an autocratic self-perpetuating bureaucracy serious abuses have to be expected. The Roman Church may seem to reform itself from time to time, but the basic problem lies in how it is organized and that has never been addressed.

Is it possible that the Roman Church made him a much better offer than he could have got elsewhere? Is it possible that he needed the money? Is it possible that he expected the law to protect him? Is it possible that he wanted to be a test case so that others would benefit from the decision?

We may not always agree with what others do, but sometimes they have good reasons that we may not know.

A male teacher at a Catholic school in my area was fired after it was learned that he had married another man. However, the students rallied and demonstrated to keep him on the staff. Nevertheless, he didn't protest the firing and was later hired by a public school.
Good for the Catholic students. Maybe there is hope that the church members can influence the church, although I am not that hopeful, given the authoritarian hierarchy of the institution.
In a neighboring state, a Catholic girls' school withdrew a job offer to a woman after the school found out she is a lesbian. The school told her they would pay her off (how ethical!) if she kept quiet about this, but instead she went public by telling a TV station about her experience, and the station aired her story.
I never heard a follow-up on this, but I hope she gets justice in the end and the church gets the condemnation it deserves.

UndercoverMan asked, Why in the hell did they offer him a job in the first place? The same reason the r.c. church allows gays in the priesthood.

While he legally has a case, I wish he didn't. If they are a private school that receives no government money let them discriminate. Then again I'm for repealing all non discrimination laws and replacing them with disclosure laws.

It seems like they offered him the job because they thought he was a good match for the school. Since they reneged on the offer after finding out he was gay it stands to reason they viewed heterosexuality one of the positive attributes that made him a good fit.

Does this mean that you are ok with not being able to eat in a restaurant because you are black as long as they disclose it? There was a time in this country that we had all kinds of those signs all over the place. From the West Coast to the East Coast, there were real estate contracts that said that they could not be sold to black people and mexicans. I have no desire to go back to those times. If we allowed it, it would happen again.

Catholic Church; for an organization that is still debating the 1940's invention of condoms these laws actually do them a favor. keep the business plan simple:
    -hire people with skills
-let people with money spend it

-everyone is a genetic scientist, they learned it from their parents.
-the catholic church has a history of ignoring the law of the land and cover up.
-there are many moral paths, not just one.

Condoms were not invented in the 1940s. They were invented at least 2000 years ago.

You are smart enough to understand what the word all means. If you decide to respond to me like an intelligent adult I will answere you. Pretending that I do not know discrimination was legal in this country. Bringing in my race to question my choices without making an argument for
Why you believe legal discrimination is bad is pure laziness.
