The Muslim-majority countries of Tajikistan, Somalia and Brunei have clamped down on Christmas. In the case of the latter country, celebrating the Christian holiday has been banned entirely.

I don't know, they seem pretty happy after they cut the heads off people.

Wait, I thought the liberals were waging a war on Christmas by saying "happy holidays?" icon_confused.gif

And what do you people think will happen in this country once their numbers are greater?

Actually, I often say "Happy Holidays" because I have Jewish friends, as well as a few Muslims, to whom saying "Merry Christmas" might be insensitive, if not outright offensive. The US is still, last time I checked, a secular country, that doesn't have an official State religion.

But I still say Merry Christmas in many situations. This campaign by hardcore Christian fundamentalists to turn the US into a single-religion theocracy should be alarming to us all.

That's ridiculous. I asked a good Jewish friend of mine how she felt about being invited to my "Christmas" parties each year (instead of "holiday" party.) She was adamant that it should remain "Christmas" party because that's what I was celebrating. Just like I would not be offended if she invited me to a Hanukkah party. We need to stop babying people's feelings about every fucking thing. People get offended way too easily these days.

Not going to happen. Plus a person's personal beliefs don't affect the quality of my life until it bleeds over into stupid shit like this. And all religions are not created equal. You simply cannot compare Buddhism to Islam.

It must be very upsetting to the GOP base, Christian conservatives, to have their Christmas violated....

    http://www.realjock.com/gayforums/4155988

...so it's completely understandable to be upset when a Muslim country might disrespect your holiday.

Christmas under fire? Hell, you guys would use your own Christmas for kindling.

Why is it that the few feel that it is necessary to deny the simple joys of life to the many? The need to control, I guess. Brunei is a wealthy sultanate located on the northern shore of the island of Borneo. Oil and natural gas are the mainstays of the sultanate's economy, about 90% of it's income is derived from petroleum products.

Brunei depends heavily on imports of food, about 60%, and durable goods such as cars. I do not know how much the U.S. supports this country through the purchase of oil, but if it is substantial why not apply economic pressure on Sultan Bolkiah to allow Christians to openly celebrate Christmas? Christians comprise 10% of the population. Officially Christians are free to celebrate Christmas privately, but decorations and public displays are not permitted.

Is he fearful that the peaceful message that Christmas brings to a fearful world will unseat him? Oh, that's right, he spreads his message of peace and joy through Sharia Law!

Are you fucking serious? Even the Dalai Lama suggests Buddhism is up to scientific scrutiny. Such as measuring the neurological effects of meditation. Buddhism is not inherently theological. It is the removal of suffering, its core tenet. Yet it is massively philosophical. Unlike Islam which is Abrahamic in nature.

    http://news.yahoo.com/egypt-jails-muslim-scholar-insulting-islam-154950950.html

YAHOO NEWSCairo (AFP) - An Egyptian court has reduced the jail term for a controversial Muslim scholar convicted of insulting Islam on his television show from five years to one, judicial officials and his lawyer said Tuesday.

Thought crime will be next. If you think about criticising religion, you shall be met with appropriate legislative action that may include harsher punishment...

    Ridiculous.

Richard Dawkins is a hero for atheists. At times, I worry that he comes off as arrogant and proselytizing, but actually he's humble, because he doesn't believe in being chosen by a magic deity. He sees us all as inconsequential to the universe, just lucky to be here, witnessing the phenomena and being inspired by it.

Secularism worked for a while. Until it became polarised because new theories in science threaten religion. It is ironic that the Big Bang theory started partly by a priest. The theory of evolution was thought of/developed by a Christian (Darwin) who later became agnostic (perhaps deist)
