In September, a former peanut executive was sentenced to 28 years in prison for his company's role in a massive salmonella outbreak that killed nine people. Stewart Parnell was convicted of knowingly shipping salmonella-tainted products, and he received what is believed to be the stiffest penalty ever related to foodborne illness

Corporations and their executives should be held accountable for their actions, and punished for their transgressions.

You mean punish like they did with bankers, those who deregulated the banks, those who decided 0% interest rates was a good idea and then follow it all up with bail-outs to prevent any hint of moral hazard?

I'd also consider trans fat to be a contaminate.

Good point, but it is unlikely to happen.

High fructose corn syrup is made from corn. Since it has become common, the corn growing industry, including industrial farmers, have become dependent on it for their profits. Thus, any attempts to eliminate high fructose corn syrup from food would have to deal with powerful and well financed lobbies.

There is a similar problem with ethanol. Most environmentalists now agree that adding ethanol to gasoline was a mistake for a variety of reasons, but the powerful ethanol lobbies are even attempting to have more ethanol added to gasoline.

I think that legislation has set a date by which trans fats have to be eliminated. In any case, some food manufacturers have stated that they are working on reformulating their recipes to eliminate it. However, in my opinion, the health hazards caused by trans fats have been known long enough that they should by now have been eliminated.

Actually, it might not take legislation to deal with trans fats. If items containing trans fats were required to be labeled similarly to how cigarettes are labeled manufactures would have to change their recipes to avoid declining sales.

Well, one should now consider becoming a vegetarian in the USA. Our corrupt Congress just passed, and Obama just signed, a bill that abolishes the requirement that meat (don't know if it applies to seafood as well) has to be labeled with its country of origin. That means the USA will be getting food from China (notorious for adulterating food products with poisonous additives) and maybe shrimp from Thailand, where they use slave labor to catch and process them) with no way to know the origin. Your "Italian" sausage and canned tuna might come from China now, and you would have no way of knowing (until you got sick, of course).

Way to go Obama! Anything to please the Chinese.

This is just more valid proof that the democrats and the republicans are both equal in their pandering to Wall Street, corporate CEOs, and foreign governments. It's disgustingicon_mad.gif

Over 80% of food here in the US has been contaminated with GMO's and killing people for decades, via food-borne illnesses such as cancer, diabetes, and heart diseases.

Go Paleo and end the madness.

hmmm - kill your own squirrels, deer, frogs, monkeys, and snakes? Cook them well if you don't want to catch something. Although I do remember reading years ago, a study of Australian aborigines who ate their fresh killed kangaroos while the meat was still warm after the kill, just ripping it off the carcass. And BTW, even cavemen and jungle guys ate some grains, roots, and fruits.

I grew up in a rural area, and farmed and hunted most of my life. Also ate some raw meat, which is really fucking good (only if it's fish, tho) Just sayin'. icon_wink.gif
