Anyone grossed out by "outie" belly buttons?

Got friskie with an otherwise appealing, hairy guy last night. As I pulled his shirt off, his belly button caught my eye. I was an "outie, sticking out at least a half inch past his reasonably flat & hairy absicon_exclaim.gif

I dimmed the lights wayyyyy down low and soon forgot about the outie; but it did kinda-sorta grossed me out, at first.

Anyone else appalled by this freak of nature?

    What/how does this happen??

I've never been up close and personal with an outie belly button, so I don't know how I'd react to one. I am, however, definitely grossed out by a beer gut.

Apparently an outie is caused by an umbilical hernia during infancy. This from parenting.com:

It has nothing to do with how the umbilical cord was cut or clamped, says Daniel McGee, M.D., a pediatrician at DeVos Children's Hospital in Grand Rapids. Most outies are nothing more than extra scar tissue. The rest are caused by an umbilical hernia, when the stomach muscles don't fuse together properly after the cord stump falls off, causing abdominal tissues to poke through. Unless an umbilical hernia doesn't heal within a year or so, there's no reason to fix your kid's outie. It's just one more thing that makes him stick out in the crowd. [I wonder if the pun was intended?]

    1) LOL at "freak of nature." Some people consider your bald head a freak of nature, too. Please grow up.

    2) "What/how does this happen??" http://google.com

    You're welcome.

Anyone old enough to remember the practice of taping a quarter over a baby's belly button to prevent outties from developing? I've never seen it done but I remember when I was a kid my dad talking about the practice and teasing young mothers about doing it to their babies.

Doesn't that give you a little extra cushioning when your forehead is bumping up against it?

I have known a few men with massive protruding navels, but for the most part they had hernias at some point. I have also know men with no navel at all… just kind of a white patch. THAT kinda weirds me out. … lol..

I had this done then I was born. It worked like a champ! To this day I have a non-protruding outie. =)

I remember when I first saw and "Outie" belly button when I was about 12. Honestly, it did freak me out because that was the first time I ever saw one. I didn't know that belly buttons could look like that.

But nah, I don't think they are too alarming. I mean, they don't seem really common but I think it's the more extreme cases that get me like this one here...

As a kid, I would poke my father's belly button whenever I would see him topless. It would tickle the hell of out him.

Not really but I do find it strange to see them so long. I am thankful of having a decent belly button.

Where was it that some characters in the book or movie didn't have belly buttons? Angels in the movie Dogma?
