Well, apparently the gay-hating nutbags make a habit of traveling to L.A. to put on their little show at various awards ceremonies - the Oscars, etc. And while they're in town, they stop off at one of the local high schools to spread their hate.

This Sunday they're picketing the Golden Globes. And they've announced that on Monday they'll be demonstrating at Redondo Union High School, just down the street from me. They plan to demonstrate at 7 am, when the students are arriving for class, to get maximum exposure. Nobody knows how they happened to pick Redondo, but it may be because the high school's Gay-Straight Alliance was written up in a local paper recently.

Why do they protest at high schools? Well, here's a snippet from a former press release:

"When you tell young people ‘it’s OK to be gay,’ and ‘God loves everybody,’ you strip them of hope. Their parents, preachers, teachers and leaders — motivated to justify their own grievous sins — have prepared them for eternal torment in hell, selfishly teaching them to be fornicating idolatrous brutes."

The RUHS Gay-Straight Alliance is organizing their own counter-protest, and they're inviting not only students but any interested members of the community. So far, over 300 people have indicated they'll attend the counter-protest on the event's Facebook page.

    Stay tuned...

If it helps, like many gays today, that particular church truly believes that gays are born gay and very much can't help but be gay (I personally have second thoughts on this...), but the twist to this belief is that someone's homosexuality would be indicative of damnation and thus their phrase "God Hates Fags".

Good grief! Please let us know how it turns out.

One thing that I truly have difficulty understand is why so many deeply religious people (it's not limited to the Westboro Baptist Church or even just Christians) obsess about homosexuality. There are so many things prohibited in scripture that are commonplace today, why don't they demonstrate against those? Why only gays? I really don't understand their obsession with other people's sex lives -- something that does not affect them at all.

    Here's the latest...

Redondo Beach has decided to close Diamond Street that morning (where the demonstrators on both sides will be) due to large expected crowds. The Westboro people will be across the street from the school entrance, and the counter-demonstrators will be lined up on the sidewalk in front of the school. Most of the counter-demonstrators will be str8. A couple of local Episcopal churches, which welcome LGBT people and perform same sex weddings, are planning to participate.

The counter-demonstration is not intended to have an impact on the Westboro nutbags. It's intended to show the LGBT kids of Redondo Union High that the community cares about them. This area is very small townish for being part of LA, and people here tend to be very protective of our own. Especially when outsiders try to stir up trouble.

The thing is, the Westboro Baptist Church are truly not concerned with homosexuality or wishing to actually change homosexuals, as homosexuals are damned. Instead THEY PREACH THE END OF TIMES by making a point out of homosexuality BUT THEY DO NOT IN ANYWAY ACTUALLY EVANGELIZE. I REPEAT THEY DO NOT EVANGELIZE. That over concern that you see from many Christians wanting to convert gays to be straight, etc, etc, would amount to as a sin called "coveting" and they do not do this. But while they believe that "God Hates Fags", they also believe that "God Hates America", and very much believe that all Christians except for "The Elect", like homosexuals, are condemned to hell.

    Sorry, not buying it.

They don't hold up signs that say "The End Is Near".

They hold up signs that say "God Hates Fags".

The only thing they "preach" is hatred of gays. And they travel all over the country to do it.

As for whether they evangelize, you must have a different dictionary than I do. Do you perhaps mean proselytize?

I'm surprised they've never come to New Orleans, considering all the "sinful" events we have here. But honestly I don't think they would get out of here alive if they came here.

They've spent the last decade making homophobes look so stupid that now the majority favors gay marriage! Be sure to thank them for tipping the balance!!!!

I agree entirely. The reason that God hates America, Westboro claims, is because America is permissive of homosexuality. That's why they carry out those literally sickening demonstrations at the funerals of service members killed in action -- because those service members were fighting for American, which permits homosexuality.

Other, more mainstream Evangelicals, have very publicly blamed gays for Texas droughts, Texas floods, wildfires, tsunami, Ebola, and other manner of natural catastrophes, citing God's vengeance against a nation that permits homosexuality. Frankly, I think we should offer the counter point that it is just as likely God's vengeance for their bigotry.

Going back to my original point, they're obsessed with gays.

actually sort of surprised nobody has taken a couple pot shots at them yet. I mean, if you get the lawyer one, it would kind of be over. Not advocating violence just surprised that it hasnt happened.

I wouldn't make claims if I knew what I was actually talking about, so I guess it's beholden to me now to conclusively prove what Westboro is really about at a later point. But before I do that, it must be understood that this is a hardcore Calvinist group, and one of the main things hardcore Calvinist would believe in is the concept of predestination. Predestination is the idea that human beings don't have free-will at all, as God will's everything, and thus humans have no real capacity to do anything, or believe in anything, to circumvent God's will, or wrath, or to please him at all. Prayer would be useless to God's eyes. Predestination also affects who God is willing to bless, give grace to and thus save. And to have God's grace means he somehow favors you, and once he favors you, you will get to join him in Heaven once the Second Coming comes due. Grace happens with or without a person's knowledge or faith in God. Unfortunately, God only favors but a few people to whom he calls his elect (being a part of the Westboro Baptist Church is no guarantee that you are apart of God's elect). Since election is all about God's will and not based upon what any one individual can do or believe in, atheists can actually be apart of God's elect, but not homosexuals since Scripture clearly indicates how "reprobate", or damned, they already are. (In my opinion, certain scientific circles that believe in "genetic determinism", or even gays who proclaim they are born gay, and can't help but be gay, and thus deserving of rights, the foundation or inspiration to such beliefs actually lie in Calvinism). So basically Calvinism very much informs and shapes what the Westboro actually believes in, their doctrines and what they are willing to say. Once you understand this about Westboro, I believe you will be able to have a lively debate with them because they will actually understand you too.

If you have some kind of superior knowledge of this cult they we don't, why would you wait until a "later point?" Just spit it out already.

    Well, it's over.

The Westboro Baptist Church - all 5 or 10 of them - showed up at 7:00 as planned with their silly signs, and were met by over 300 counter-demonstrators from the community, including former Redondo Beach mayor Mike Gin, an openly gay man who was elected to two terms as a city councilman and another two terms as mayor.

The counter-demonstrators had been coached in advance not to engage the Westboro idiots; apparently their strategy is to goad people into a confrontation, then file a lawsuit against the city for failing to protect their civil rights (must be a Calvinist thing icon_rolleyes.gif ).

After half an hour the Westboro idiots packed up and left. There were no arrests and no ugly incidents.

    Here's a video:

A few notes about the South Bay, for those who aren't familiar with it (and to truly understand it, you have to live here)...

It's a very Republican area, mainly because the aerospace industry has been based here for decades, but people here are educated and very accepting. They vote Republican in the interest of their defense industry jobs. But the South Bay also voted 2 to 1 against Prop 8 (the measure that made same sex marriage temporarily illegal). And when a lesbian couple bought a house down the street from me, a straight couple (in their 60s) threw them a "welcome to the neighborhood" party, and the whole block showed up.

It's still a pretty dismal place to be gay and single - the lone gay bar in Redondo, which is the only gay bar for half an hour's drive, gets a "crowd" of maybe 20 on a Saturday night - but it's getting to be a popular place for affluent gay couples to move to.

The reason people love it here, myself included, is the sense of community. People know their neighbors, their local firefighters and police, and their letter carriers by name. People here look out for each other - several of my neighbors have offered to watch my house and pick up my mail when I go out of town on vacation. And people don't like outsiders coming in and trying to stir up trouble - as the Westboro nutbags found out.

I don't understand why everyone rushes to "counter protest" and to video these idiots. Doesn't anyone understand this just brings them further into the spotlight? This is exactly what they want. Everyone know the Reverend Phelps by name, which is extremely sad.

In this case, the counter-demonstration was intended to show the LGBT kids of Redondo Union High School that the community supports them. It was felt that ignoring Westboro's presence would be the same as ignoring those kids.

People in Redondo Beach did not want those kids thinking it was in any way an acceptable thing to do. There were straight, stay-at-home moms with small children who showed up just to send the message that this does not happen in our town - this does not happen to our kids.

I'm very happy it came off the way it did. For most of those kids, this was their first experience with being the target of organized hatred by full-grown adults. A lot of them were quite apprehensive going into this morning's event, and I'm glad they could see how ineffective those nutbags were.

I think they learned a couple of very good lessons this morning - about the importance of supporting each other, and about the kind of town they live in.

Well, that makes sense. I just wish people could resist recording them because it just makes them into celebrities of sorts.

Hmmmm, Redondo? Hmmmm, interesting city pick and on 1 11, they aint foolin nobody, I wouldn't be surprised if they got on a plane to DC to picket out front of the capital in concert tandem with that hag Kim Davis, who has her own seat within the House camber, apparently to stare down the president at his last state of the union address. icon_lol.gif
