tazzari saidI continually thank heaven for the "Ignore" function...
Polly Toynbee, in the Guardian a few years ago; she's talking about on-line comments on the Guardian's website:
"...considered discussion is being drowned in a tide of vituperative gibberish. A few hundred commenters appear to be engaged in a competition to reach the outer limits of stupidity. They post so often and shout so loudly that intelligent debate appears to have fled from many threads, as other posters have simply given up in disgust. I've now reached the point at which I can't be bothered to read beyond the first page or so of comments. It is simply too depressing.
"The pattern... is always the same. You can raise any issue you like, introduce a dossier of new information, deploy a novel argument, drop a shocking revelation. The comments which follow appear almost to have been pre-written... Another tranche will concentrate on attacking the parentage and lifestyle of the author. Very few address the substance of the article.
"I believe that much of this is native idiocy: the infantile blathering of people who have no idea how to engage in debate."
How's that for a fit, Art?
A very good fit. Matched by the Right Wing in real life. The Teabaggers shout down others in public meetings they invade, the Bundy landgrabbers did it the other day in Oregon.
In their minds, free speech is a 1-sided Constitutional right that only applies to Right Wingers. And that philosophy is reflected in their behavior on social media. southbeach's flooding of this site with his crap is like screaming at a public meeting hall.
Although I note he's recently begun to salt his spamming with providing some apparent gay information. This shift seems to come after my recent criticism of his flooding us with nothing but political propaganda.
But even here, if you really analyze his gay "news", it contains lots of implied & subtle digs at gays and liberals. So indeed, I think your observation is very accurate.
I've said before that I myself have sensed the real purpose of these constant attacks is to demoralize us, and reduce our resistance and numbers here. RJ, with a gay membership approaching 400,000 is a very big and tempting target for the Right.
They've been caught infiltrating non-Right opponents before. I think it would be extremely naive to not consider that possibility with RJ, given the hostile & persistent patterns we see here.
