May be travelling to Sydney and looking for an affordable, gay-friendly hotel near the central station. Ideally it would have a gym and sauna and/or pool.

Even just an area/ neighbourhood to look at would help, Thanks.

If you maybe find something on Hyde Park side then you are very close to everything and also a short walk to Oxford St if you like going to the gay bars etc, I haven't been for a long time however it probably hasn't changed that much over the years. Sydney is such a diverse place and with a large gay population so I wouldn't worry too much about it as they are very used to it.
The other option would be find something on Oxford St, then you will be fine because its the gay area.
    Hope you find something

Sydney in general is very gay-friendly. I'd recommend staying near Oxford St though, it's very fun.

Check out the Vibe Hotel on Goulburn St, it's a fairly short walk to gay nightlife and has all the conveniences you're interested in. I knew it as the Southern Cross Hotel, not sure how it's changed since then.

    The Vibe isn't too bad.
Loved the Pullmans on Hyde Park. It has a gym and pool on the top floor which looks back across the city.

If you are looking for something a little less pricey then the Sebel city gate isn't too bad. Hasn't got a gym but there are ones close by.

Mardi Gras is a busy time in Sydney. Book early.

I don't know if there are any cheap hotels near Central Station. Probably mostly cheap and nasty

Some are OK. Vibe is OK. Some hostels- Central Backpackers for instance. I think they have double rooms for a couple.
There are other youth hostels; one at The Rocks is nice.

There are a couple on Crown Street, Cron Lodge etc? Very handy to the scene.
Hard to get accommodation in Mardi Gras month. Hotel prices are high and we locals often have people we knew years ago suddenly appear begging for a room to stay in.

Big hotels will be pricey. See what your dollar gets you here.

Best of luck and have a great Mardi Gras

The next month will be the busiest due to Mardi Gras.

    Two words: Book early

Anywhere near Hyde Park / Potts Point / Darlinghurst / Surry Hills are pretty gay friendly. Vibe Hotel (as mentioned above) is great. Four Points/Westin in the CBD are good choices as well.

Chippendale/Redfern are also great locations to look at.

Because it's mardi gras and if you're staying during the parade, if you get a hotel next to Oxford St., you get a fantastic front-row view of everything going on down on the streets/parade.

I stayed on Sheraton on the Park based on a recommendation that I read on Passport Magazine - devoted to Gay travelers.

It was amazing, great staff, and great location to the Gay District of Sydney as well as all areas of downtown Sydney and also the Metro being right there. The location was just right in walking distance of Royal Botanical Gardens, Opera House, Circular Quay - take a boat ride to other areas of Sydney. Also, they have an amazing breakfast buffet in the morning, so it was perfect which was included in the price of the hotel stay. Although it was a bit pricey for what they offered and more I was glad I stayed there.

Thanks everyone I've booked a lovely little hotel in Surry Hills. Looks close to Oxford St, has a pool and gym. Will let you know how it pans out!
