Several studies have revealed a much greater use of the internet and social media by psychiatric patients in mental hospitals than previously assumed. In addition to usage, behavioral patterns were observed and documented in surveys. One major characteristic of social media use is the practice of "lurking" or browsing anonymously, or making attempts to hide user information or profiles. Given the escalating healthcare costs, there is concern that internet usage is one factor in driving up costs. A committee has been formed to recommend whether such use should be limited or curtailed.

Mental health related Internet use among psychiatric patients: a cross-sectional analysis

Most psychiatric patients are Internet users. Mental health related Internet use is common among patients, mainly for information seeking. The use of social media is generally less frequent. It varies significantly between different user types and was shown to be associated with high frequency of Internet use. The results illustrate the importance of the Internet in mental health related contexts and may contribute to the further development of mental health related online offers.

southbeach1500 saidWell, that explains a lot with relation to the bizarre behavior I have noticed here.

Yup, especially the hidden profiles and radical left-wing "dependent on the Government" attitudes.

Wouldn't access to the outside world be therapeutic and healing to some people? Isn't there software for servers that could permit user reading, but not sending? And blocked sending would in-turn not permit joining social sites as members. Although some sites do permit limited browsing by non members who can read only. I think that's possible for RJ, is it not?

I'm not sure if total isolation is healthy and curative for all mental patients. Having information access can be mentally stimulating and beneficial for some, and part of a socializing phase of their treatment. I think this issue is best determined for individual patients by competent professionals treating them, and not by politicians, nor by public opinion, and blanket policies that permit no exceptions.

And it's obvious that your doctors aren't monitoring your internet activity. If they were they'd have increased the dosage of your meds a long time ago. Although I suspect that some of you are at the maximum allowable dosage.

Clearly your observations are based on personal experience. Are you currently in an institution or is this based on your recollections?

I think your observations are valid. They can be disruptive on sites, but that is probably handled by admins to varying degrees.

    Exactly.

Yes, could even be an institution for the criminally insane.

I shudder to think about the contents of his medical records...perhaps a dual diagnosis of Paranoid Schizophrenia (delusions, hidden profile, disorganized speech ) plus Antisocial Personality Disorder (obsession with abused animals, irritability, aggressiveness, etc.) wouldn't surprise me.

    Perhaps. icon_cool.gif

I seriously doubt he's still on the loose, fortunately. I'm sure they dropped a net over him many, many years ago.

Do you think his posting on the net is a source of therapy?

Yes, I'm sure his time preoccupied with anything is a source of therapy.....but only for his caregivers.
