This one looks good, being released on February 26th, about Eddie The Eagle, who came out of no where to participate in ski jumping in the 1988 Olympics. It stars Hugh Jackman, of X-Men fame, and Taron Egerton, who starred in last year's Kingsman, The Secret Service.

Eddie became famous without ever being very good. He was able to compete only because the UK didn't have another ski jumper. His jumps were nowhere near world class; this was one of the last Olympics before the IOC got serious about requiring athletes to meet minimum standards. He would not be allowed in the Games today.

A friend of mine - a two-event winter Olympian from Canada who served on the Calgary 1988 organizing committee - was not impressed at all with the media attention focused on Eddie. There were hundreds and hundreds of legitimate world class competitors who labored in obscurity at those Games and never saw a moment of glory, while a third rate "athlete" became a media darling.

Feel-good Hollywood bullshit aside, the Olympics are not about holding hands and singing Kum Ba Ya. They're about the greatest athletes in the world competing at the highest level. Eddie shouldn't have been allowed on the hill.

The movie looks pretty good from the trailers I have seen. I agree with you bro4bro, the Olympics should be for elite athletes!
